How does that work? I don’t have hot water or an outlet in my toilet room. Did you have to renovate, or was there service already?

I have an electric one and just ran an extension cable. If I owned I would definitely install an outlet next to the toilet.

Never considered an extension cord. Don’t think the mrs would go for that. Ah well. At least it never gets too cold here.

I have COVID to thank for showing me the light. Never going back.

You didn’t know you needed one until you use it. Life changing.

Best purchase I ever made. Can’t believe I lived without one before. America needs more bidets.

One of my life purposes is converting people to The Way of Bidet. I have bought over a dozen as gifts for people and pretty much anybody who is actually willing to install it and try it loves it and hopefully converts others in turn. Clearly superior to wiping in terms of hygiene, saving money on TP, and not irritating the bum.

Have you ever tried Linux?

Love my bidet.

Did you know that roughly half of people use a bidet while seated and half use it while standing and neither of these people are aware the other exists? Today you learned. You are welcome sir.

One I didn’t see mentioned yet: a rice cooker.

Put in rice, add water, push start button, and you get perfect rice every time. I’m usually against single-purpose kitchen tools but a rice cooker is soo worth it.

Really only if you eat a lot of rice. For once a year or so, a pot on the stove works just fine. The actual benefit I’ve see for ricecookers is how well they can hold the rice for hours ready to go, but that’s more of a commercial benefit I think.

[…] but that’s more of a commercial benefit I think

For me, this is the primary benefit of a rice cooker. Having warm, cheap, filling food on demand at any time is fantastic. I am so lazy and my little rice buddies are always ready to go when I can’t be bothered.

“Rice is great if you’re really hungry and want to eat two thousand of something”

I eat a lot of ice and I still just make it in a pot.

I like to imagine you huddled over an ice field, stirring water in a pot until it turns to the perfect slushy consistency for your fresh homemade ice.

Shit this comment made me so thirsty good lord I need some water

Artesan ice. $17.99/litre

When I had a rice cooker I used it for brownies. A lot of rice, too, but probably even more brownies.

I would like to know more about this.

I think premixes worked well enough. And maybe some cup brownie recipes. I would use simple recipes, and then just check on it periodically until I got used to how long it took my cooker to bake them.

I need this recipe ASAP.

Get a box of brownie mix

Mix according to the instructions

Put in rice cooker

Start cooker

Brownies are done when cooker cycle finishes. Test with toothpick, run longer if not fully baked.

OK that sounds so simple. Going to try this. Thanks!

A rice cooker can serve as a cheaper instapot tho. I can steam rice and veggies without having to babysit a pot.

I also have kitchen anxiety, and in a roommate situation can keep a rice cooker in my room.

Living in Japan, this almost didn’t register to me. I have literally never met anybody that didn’t have one. When you move out, you use your family’s old one until you can buy a newer one.

Everyone should have one, absolutely.

When I did a homestay in Japan, my host dad was shocked my family didn’t have one. I do now though!

I know this will be a popular response, but I don’t get it.

I just use a pot and the rice is always perfect? Not hard at all? Am I just good?

Yeah just add however many cups of rice and then add water to the specified line. Don’t need to do any of that finger bullshit to check water levels

And by cup I mean the cup that comes with the rice cooker not sure how it corresponds to the actual unit of measurement

Rice goes in my instapot ( the crocpot version technicaly) on low pressure and irs every bit as good as my old rice cooker, once I nailed the timing and water amount. Bonus: it’s great at a BUNCH of other types of cooking also

Between that thing and my air fryer, I rarely use the oven anymore. Even more so for the microwave.

I recently got an instant pot and gave my rice cooker back to my parents, the tough part was figuring out how to make it not stick of you don’t have a nonstick liner. Letting it naturally release pressure with the keep warm off seems to do the trick for mine, I’m guessing quick release releases too much moisture, and the keep warm doesn’t help either. With that I get good rice every time with no sticking.

I have the same pot and it defaults to low but every recipe I find says use high so that’s what I’ve beeping doing. Now I kinda Wana try low.

Gotta use low, that high-pressure renvitonment ruins the fluffiness in my experience. It’s acceptable when the flavor addition is sufficient though, like a marinated pork loin slow cooked with rice is fantastic even if the rice is paste practically.

Mine always seems turn turn out fine on high 6min with 10min natural release but now you have me wondering if I just haven’t had good rice haha. How long do you do it on low?

I think it’s 8 mins on low with fast release but my notes are at home so I can’t verify that. I also prefer to toast my rive first in butter, that has a substantial bearing here.

Hmm, okay, I’ll bite. What’s the secret with low pressure for long grain rice like basmati? I’ve been using 1:1 ratio rice:water for 6 minutes on high with a 10 minute natural release.

Bone broth in place of water and using the fry function of the crock pot to toast the rice before hand in a little bit of butter

Interesting. How many minutes on low, and quick release or natural?

I always quick release bit that’s because I am certifiably impatient. I’m not at home so I would have to check down what I wrote in my reference boom but I THINK I use 8 minutes. Now, those 8 mins only start once the pressure top engages, so the quantity of rice and the model of the unit probably allow for about 3 minutes of wiggle room due to preheat cycle differences and amount of time to reach pressure.

So what?

So much this. I’m usually responsible for cooking for the week, and prepping rice was so much of a hassle in the middle of cooking everything else that most of the time I didn’t even bother and went for pasta instead— way easier to cook, but easily 3x the calories.

After I got a rice cooker, I just pop like 4 cups in that mfer and we got enough rice to last through like 2 days worth of dinner + bentos for lunch the day after.

ok this might sound heretical but a “hack” i learned from cooking youtube is to just boil rice like pasta then drain. I do this for about ~12 mins with white rice and it comes out perfect every time with no risk of messing up. Downside is you need to drain it.

unsure the validity of this claim? but apparently there can be a non-insignificant amount of arsenic in american grown rice, and boiling can help leech it out into the water.

Love mine.

When I make chicken or beef stock I put it in I’ve cube trays. On some mornings I add the rice, a stock ice cube, and maybe some miso. I let it ride while I get ready and then crack an egg on the cooked rice and add some avocado, tamari and rice seasoning (nori and sesame)

Best breakfast and super easy

For anyone who doesn’t want a rice cooker but can’t find a good basic white rice recipe: Put rice and water in a pot (1 cup rice to 1.5 cup water. People will tell you 2 cups water, punch them, or ignore them, your choice.) Turn it on high until it boils, stirring lightly occasionally to stop it from sticking. As soon as it starts boiling (not simmering) cover it with a lid and turn on low. Keep covered until it’s done (just taste it to test if it’s done.)

P.S. You can add whatever seasonings you want if you find something good online or something. It’s not important to actually cooking the rice.

My husband got us a Zojirushi rice cooker for my birthday one year, and I love it so much! We had an old $15 Oster one previously, which was also pretty nice to have, but oh boy. I’m spoiled by Zojirushi now. We could make a cake in it! I haven’t yet… But I could! Lol.

what’s the difference with cooking rice the normal way?

An instant pot can do that and a whole lot more. I’m not sure if that falls under $100 but I would bet if you got an off-brand version it would.

You can do a lot more with a rice cooker. Soup, pasta, sauces, even steam vegetables if you put a tray on it.

You can do all of that. I don’t care either way. I was just suggesting because of the “single use” comment.

The relatively good larger instant pot that I bought a couple of years ago was around $79, so I reckon you can still get one for under $100. Although I also have a rice cooker, I find this thing indispensable. I often have 5-8 people at my house, so a go to is throwing a bunch of chicken breast, soy, ginger, garlic, brown sugar, etc, in the instant pot for around 30-40 minutes total time while the rice is cooking. Shred chicken, turn to sauté, add a little corn starch slurry. Boom teriyaki chicken.

We do a similar thing for chicken tacos, but spicing with chicken bouillon, cumin, cayenne, chili powder, garlic, onion, tomato. Shred, enjoy meat for tacos, enchiladas, etc. I make a passable birria in about around 2 hours.

Country ribs/pork shoulder, bbq sauce, apple juice, onion, garlic. While it’s cooking in the instant pot, simmer down an onion. Not quite caramelize until it’s jelly, but sweat until onions are soft. Turn oven to broil, cut the entire pack of kings hawaiian rolls or similar in half, butter and brown under the broil. Shred the pork, spread on the rolls, add a little bbq sauce, the onions, and cover with provolone slices. Broil again until cheese melts.

Chili is another good one. Although I haven’t done it, you can use unsoaked dry beans in some recipes. I usually just throw a few cans of my faves (I prefer it bitier, so more kidney) with spices and browned meat of some sort (feel free to omit) and we’re good to go.

Most of the things I make in the instant pot are things that I would normally have to wait all day for, or at least 3-4 hours. Not great after a work day. Low and slow recipes work really well in instant pot with a minor adjustment here and there, and often you turn a 4 hour recipe into a 1 hour recipe. And as a poor, this type of cooking can be a game changer because low and slow is often for foods that are cheap. if you head to the store and buy a ny strip, you can come home and be eating great in 15 minutes. Not so much with a much, much cheaper piece of chuck.

Is it different from a pressure cooker? Because pressure cooker is similar (add water, rice, start cooking, wait for X whistles) and has multiple use cases.

Rice cookers are not sealed for high pressure (they are in fact not sealed at all, just like regular pots and lids, because they need to lose excess moisture) and they are configured for this one particular thing: every rice cooker is calibrated for a fixed serving of rice (or couple different settings) with fixed amount of water. All it really does is turn off at the perfect moment, which is determines by weight. which is determined by a thermostat (magnet-based in this case)

The high end rice cookers use sensors and will vent excess moisture or hold in moisture as need and can adjust cook time.

Zojirushi calls their sensors “micom”

Ah okay. Thanks!

Oh, I have a pressure sealed rice cooker, but it’s the top of the line Zojuroshi and is more like $600. It’s also not fast, takes like an hour, but the rice is divine. Sadly, I rarely cook rice. I got it for my sister, who lived in China for a while and used to eat rice all the time, but then moved into a tiny house and gave it back to me… I can’t really bear to throw it out - but I only use it if I’m making a huge amount of rice randomly.

It takes longer because it soaks the rice, which makes it more consistent.

It’s great for quinoa, farro and couscous too. Love our tiger rice cooker, it’s a work horse!

Speaking of, be careful about consuming too much rice because of arsenic. There are plenty of other grains that don’t soak up arsenic so readily and have a better nutritional profile. It’s fine to eat rice, just switch it out throughout the week.

It’s really not that hard to cook rice in a pan. I already get perfect rice every time. A rice cooker seems a waste of money.

More importantly, it clutters the kitchen.

A pair of high fidelity earplugs (aka concert earplugs or filtering earplugs). You can get a good non-custom pair for $15–$40, and that’ll work well for the average person for a long time.

They’re excellent for live music, airplanes, and anytime you want the world to be quieter but still need to be able to understand speech. And for music specifically, they can bring the volume level down just enough to be safe without muffling the sound like traditional foam earplugs do. Protect your hearing, kids!

Protect your hearing, kids!

Seriously, PROTECT YOUR FUCKING HEARING. I was young and stupid (now I’m no longer young) and went to way too many raves, gigs etc. without any sort of hearing protection, and now I have a nice constant background track of EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and can’t hear higher frequencies worth shit

Right ear went to working in a call centre. Left ear seems to be trying to decide if it’s going to recover or not from some unaware idiot in Tesco suddenly walking up and slamming his stock cart shut right next to me. I really hope I don’t end up with stereo EEEEEEEEEEEEE but it feels like an inevitable matter of time at this point. There goes the left one again…

I didnt even go to any concerts or anything and i still have it 😭

I can get tinnitus if I have too much ear-wax and I have to remove it periodically, since it wont come out on its own.

Yep, tinnitus is your brain filling in the absence of hearing, its not a condition in itself

I got some of these and they are excellent

Comfy enough to use for sleeping?

You can buy earplugs made specifically for this purpose that stick out less so you can lie down

I’m sure you could with these, but I would advise against it because smoke alarms.

Just went to my first concert with a pair of these and I highly recommend. Not having a headache and ringing ears the next day was really nice.

I know it’s way more expensive, but the last gig I went to, I used my AirPods Pro in transparency mode, and it reduced the sound down from an insane ~110db to peaks of 90! Definitely worth protecting your ears.

Airpods (and noise cancelling in general) are not substitutes for hearing protection!

Yes, good point! Whilst it’s probably better than nothing, it won’t be a proper substitute for proper hearing protection like the earplugs mentioned

Yeah, I can’t stand losing the high frequencies and overall feel of the music with “musician’s” earplugs. How anyone other than a drummer plays with them and is satisfied is beyond me. I have some Etymotics just sitting here.

I’m no earplug connoisseur, but I’ve been using Westone’s WM16 for smaller venues, and Etymotic Research’s ER20XS dual-flange for louder situations. I haven’t tried much else, but these work well for me. I’ve also heard great things about Earasers, Eargasm, and Hearos.

Earasers are a bit more expensive and appear to have a unique ergonomic eartip. iirc you can get them for $40 elsewhere, maybe Amazon. I’ve read that Earasers’ “-19dB Peak” model has a very slight sound reduction, so I’d probably opt for their middle “European Standard” model. On the other end of the price spectrum, Hearos is particularly inexpensive at a glance. Idk anything about specific models.

Some brands have multiple types of earplugs (e.g. for music, shooting, construction work), so make sure you’re getting one designed for music or “high-fidelity” or something like that. Any of the “good” brands are probably going to work just fine. (Read the reviews if you’re unsure.) Most brands seem to include multiple eartip sizes in the package so you can choose the right fit.

Beyond that, there is some element of personal preference. For example, I first tried Etymotic’s classic triple-flange version and didn’t like how deep they stuck into my ears. It felt invasive. But the dual-flange model feels great for me.

And finally, there are different options for how much attenuation (noise reduction) you want. Like I mentioned, my “-16dB average attenuation” earplugs feel good for small/medium venues (a backroom venue of a bar, maybe a theater). For a larger venue (arena or stadium, or even just a really loud loud theater) you’d definitely want more significant average attenuation, probably in the low-to-mid twenties.

Most earplugs will be confusingly marketed with multiple attenuation values. One will be an official NRR value, which is apparently required but controversial, and the other(s) will be the average and/or peak decibel reduction “when the product is used correctly” as reported by the manufacturer. It seems people don’t talk about the NRR as often. But it’s fun that they’ve made it more complicated for us to compare products.

I should also mention that if you’re a performing musician or hardcore concert-goer, you may consider springing for custom-molded earplugs, which are way pricier. I haven’t made that upgrade yet, but everyone who does seems to think it’s life-changing.

This got long, sorry!

I’m no earplug connoisseur

7 paragraphs about earplugs

uh oh, they’re onto me

+1 for Eargasm. The real MVP is the keychain carrying case which ensures I never leave home without em. As a drummer, DJ, and loud music enthusiast they’re one of my best purchases ever. I genuinely forget they’re in sometimes, but then I’ll take em out and it makes a big difference. Awesome quality of sound, just less damage.

I didn’t even know this existed. I really suffer in places with too much background noise.

For anyone reading this, I definitely recommend Earasers. I have spent the better part of my life around really loud music things, especially because of my job. These things work wonders and are incredibly comfortable and low profile

I’ve been using my AirPods Pro 2 at races. They seem to work exceptionally well with noise cancellation on.

Even regular earplugs at a loud concert work amazingly well for me. I can still hear conversation (people yelling over the music) but the deafening volume of the concert is brought down to acceptable levels.

I don’t understand why concerts are so loud. They’re just…so, so fucking loud…

Went to my first concert recently—I loved it, but immediately knew I should have bought a pair of these.

If you have a car get a dashcam. It’s more valuable than any insurance because it will definitively prove what happened when something goes wrong. Bonus: you can post videos of bad drivers doing stupid things on the internet for imaginary points.

If only there was actually a good car dashcam, but every time I go down that rabbit hole I give up frustrated. The quality (build, mounting, video, whatever) is shit in pretty much all of them, and the “passable” ones look like a web cam from 2005 still.

There’s a reason for that, Linus Tech Tips did a great video on it. You’re better off buying an old go pro and using that.

Only if you remember to turn it on

there are also android apps to do it with your phone but then you need a fairly safe mounting point for imyoir phone high up

We’ve been happy with the VIOFO A129 Pro. Not very expensive and good quality video on both cameras day and night. There are lots of day/night comparison videos and the VIOFO beat a lot of cameras that were much more expensive.

I agree, I also have a VIOFO A129 DUO and it’s great. But I haven’t found the time yet to mount the rear cam… too much hassle to bring the cables to the back of the car.

I thought it would be kinda ugly when I looked at it, but depending on how your car is designed once it’s mounted you don’t really see it so it’s fine. Took a while to figure out how to wire it to the battery though, mostly because I’d never done that before.

People lie. Even a shittiest, cheapest dashcam will be better than nothing, when you have to prove to your insurance company who was really at fault after a collision.

I’ve bought the N2 Pro from Vantrue a couple of years ago and I’ve been super happy with it. The quality is pretty good and it has actually capable night vision and parking surveillance. I’ve also bought one for my brother in law (who got into an accident just a month after) and one for my grandma. Not to sound like an ad, but these are definitely worth checking out even if it’s an older model.

I got one for $40 that’s 1080p, and the “high endurance” sd card I got for $15 is still going 4 years later.

Don’t overthink it. You don’t need something fancy.

Look for a BlackVue or Thinkware.

I’d say before you even get a dashcam get an AC jump-starter. Those are less than $100

I got my dash cam after someone tried to blame me for t-boning myself…

A bike. Poor people in underdeveloped countries can use it to get access to education and markets, while people from developed countries can ise it to keep healthy and reduce their environmental footprint

I was going to say that, but out of the 6 bikes in the garage none of them are under $100 even second hand.

In fact I would advise against getting a cheap shitty bike that isn’t going to last. Spend the extra money, get something good. It’s better for the environment and your wallet in the long run.

I’ve driven “good” bikes all my life. Aluminium frame, disc brakes, fancy suspension, 3x9 gears. That sort of thing.

Wanna know what my best biking experience was? Riding a steel frame, 3-speed dutch-style rental omafiets with no suspension and regular-ass brakes on a vacation. That thing was hella comfortable, sturdy as a brick and convenient.

If I lived in a not fully car-brained city where you can safely bike and was tight on money, I’d absolutely buy an old cheap used regular-ass steel frame bike with no frills and use the hell out of it until it’s irreparably broken. You can leave that thing standing in the rain, locked with just a frame lock (or perhaps even no lock at all) all without worrying that it might get damaged or stolen because there isn’t much to damage or steal in the first place.

I also don’t see how buying a “good” bike in any way helps the environment when the alternative is re-using something that’s already been built and successfully used before.

I love my 2000€ Brompton that I daily-drive but I’d be nearly as happy with a 100€ bike like I described above. You don’t get more bike when you go above that price point, you only get a more fancy bike.

A good “omafiets” costs a lot more than $100 though, at least here in the netherlands.

Atemu
link

Oh I’m sure the one I rode cost a lot more than that, I just took that as an example for a super basic bicycle. Point being that this super basic one was better in many ways than the fancy one at home.

I was also not talking about getting a “good” omafiets either; that was, like, the whole point.

You don’t need an expensive bike for commuting, but for the sake of your health DO NOT DO any sports on cheap bikes! Repairing your skull is not fun. Different bikes for different rides!

I’m really jealous of the Brommie’s folding mechanism.

I currently use a full size Dutch-style bike, but been keeping my eyes out for a secondhand folder for easy travelling, once I can swallow the price 🥲

Steel vs. aluminum might very well depend on how big you are, and if you’re a guy or gal.

I’m small and the weight difference between aluminum and steel is significant enough that I’ll never go back to steel if I can help it. Basically, with aluminum I can carry groceries and such easier b/c the bike itself is lighter.

Large folks with lots of muscle might not see this difference, however.

Yeah I was going to say this too. I got a cheap Walmart bike and it was still $300.

Here in Germany you can get a second hand bike for free. In the UK I used to be able to get one for about 50£…My current one is quite fancy, and I got it for 180€, so I don’t think it’s impossible to find it cheap and good.

That’s great! I wish it were like that here in the U.S. Bike culture is trampled by car culture here.

The usual warning is not to buy a new one in the supermarket for those prices, as what you get might be worse than not having a bike

I’m a student in the Netherlands. I’ve bought my current bike for €50 second hand around 4 years ago. Aside from some flat tires and the occasional loose chain it’s never failed me, and I use it at least 4 times a day.

My previous bike originally belonged to my dad and it only gave out after 30 years of constant use.

The key is to not buy an expensive sports bike with tons of features. My bike has a bell, lights, a reverse pedal brake, a kickstand and a frame lock. That’s it. No gears, no wires, no carbon fiber. Just a solid steel bike. Cheap to construct and it’ll last for years.

It would increase your travel distance though. Mechanical advantage for the win.

I live on the 2km² old town island, everything outside that area is “here be dragons” for us ;)

I was gonna say this.

$100 on craigslist or a local bike refurbishing place (where I got mine) will get you something that will last for years.

Throw in a $15 bike lock, a cheap returned helmet, and a $5 rear bike light and you’re set for life.

If you live in America, there are certainly a lot of things to consider on this point; mainly whether cycling in your area is even safe—obviously the ideal solution would be to move to an area with safer cycling, but that’s not an option for everyone—and I’d much rather someone not cycle than die because their area has horrible roads for cycling and they didn’t think about that. Check the safety of your area, and consider moving to a safer area for cycling if necessary (Or if you’re in it for the long haul, consider pitching in the community and trying to lead it towards a safer cycling future)

Soft close toilet seat. You’ll slam the seat out of habit every time you visit someone.

These are great, especially if you have kids, but you do end up slamming toilet seats everywhere else.

Yep I have that problem now. All the toilet seats in my house are soft close and I slam public toilet seats whenever I’m out of the house now without thinking

I can relate to this so much. When I bought my last house it didn’t have soft close seats and I was so used to it that I slammed it every time.

Isn’t slamming elsewhere a reason not to get one?

Nah, that’s their problem. Now they need to upgrade seats.

3 dozen pairs of identical socks. Mine are black crew cut. I’ll wear them until the last few pairs are worn through and I’ll never have a sock without a mate.

This is how I roll.

I buy that merino wool though so you sure as shit aren’t getting it for under 100.

Still, all of the problems I had with my feet before the switch are gone.

You can still get wool blend from Costco.

Welcome to Costco. I love you.

For real though I get that 90% merino blend and I’m happy with it. I haven’t found anywhere cheaper. It’s about the same everywhere you look.

Everyone recommends washing them a lot less than regular socks but i just don’t have it i me so I buy a few dozen pairs. I only skip putting on a clean pair if I haven’t had a shower, and that’s rare. It’s usually the first thing I do every day.

You’ve got life figured out

You do you. I subscribe to the “variety is the spice of life” mindset. I need different styles for different use cases and different colors just for fun.

See, I do that with my shirts because shirts, and it makes sense. The main reason I don’t do that with socks is because they’re paired items.

A water kettle. Doesn’t have to be any fancy one, but it really fucking rocks for anything you might think of : want hot water for tea? No problem. Need hot water to steep something? No problem.

Most mid-range ones are insanely power efficient too, often being alot better than just boiling water on a stovetop, or using a microwave. And, depending on insulation, heat can be stored for over 6! hours.

A kettle is such a default kitchen item in the UK that I find it kinda crazy that it’s not standard somewhere like the US, though I know I’ve seen the difference in base voltage being a factor before.

I went to visit a friend in the US (los angeles). She asked me what I want for breakfast and I said just some tea please and nothing else. I saw her going from confusion to terror in 5 seconds. And I was like whats wrong? Is everything ok?

Eventually she boiled water in a mug in the microwave, put in some pieces of apples and called it tea.

A few weeks later I went for work in the bay area. I just cannot start a day without tea. I saw the hotel I stayed in had a bit of difficulty in the tea department. Decided to buy my own kettle so I can have my tea in the room. Naively went to an electric store to buy a kettle. There was none. I was like WTF. Went to target, there were none. Only stove ones. But my room didnt have a stove. Then it hit me americans just dont boil water like the rest of the world.

I’m an Aussie living in the USA and I’ve got a $10 kettle from Walmart… somewhere. They do exist. I don’t use it often any more because we have an espresso machine now, and it can produce instant hot water.

That is pure insanity, wtf USA are you alright? I always use my kettle at least once a day. For tea or for heating up pasta water much faster

Target sells electric kettles.

So does Walmart.

Even Best Buy sells electric kettles.

I dont want to call bullshit, but I’m definitely smelling it.

It was 2011. There were only stove kettles. 🤷🏽

Just use the microwave. It’s pretty much as fast. Hotel lobbies often have one.

DO NOT MICROWAVE WATER

there’s a risk it will basically detonate when you take it out and you will be covered in burns.

I think it’s a default item everywhere except north America.

As part of reviewing a stay, Airbnb always asks if the place had a coffee maker. I’ve only ever ticked yes in the US, Canada, and Indonesia.

(edit: I should clarify, it asks if there was a coffee machine, but it DOESN’T ask if there was a kettle, showing the US-centric app design.)

You’re a psycho if you don’t have one in Canada. Don’t lump us in with america

I stayed in Ontario for a while and the house didn’t have one, but I bought one no problem

Voltage isn’t an issue iirc, just that it isn’t in our “culture” to use kettles. Of my extended family (20+) there’s only 2 who have kettles.

voltage is a bit of a factor - electric kettles heat water more slowly (about half) in the US than in somewhere like the UK. There’s a definete cultural aspect as well, but I think more people would hop on it if (as in the UK) having one meant basically instant access to boiling water

The amount of time it takes for our US kettle to reach temperature is ridiculous. My wife and I have a kettle that I only really use when I make us a pot of tea. It takes about 5 minutes to bring a liter of water to a boil and it doesn’t get much better with less water. If I’m just making one cup, I’m just gonna put it in the microwave.

I’ve seriously considered getting a 220V outlet installed just for a proper kettle. We like our hot beverages, so I kinda think it would be worth it.

Might need to descale your kettle. Mine doesn’t take 5 minutes to heat a liter, and it’s on 120v.

Totally agree, I used to use an electric kettle for my coffee every morning and while waiting for it to boil, I could

  • hand grind my beans
  • empty the dishwasher
  • get the pour over setup
  • check my email

All before being ready to pour

It’s still the fastest way to heat water. It’s just that people don’t really care. It has nothing to do with the fucking voltage.

Yeah sorry I meant to say I know I’ve seen it mentioned as a factor before, didn’t know whether it’s actually true or not. If that’s not a factor, get on it Murica.

Voltage * Amps tells you how fast the water will boil. So lower voltage can be fixed with higher amps.

The UK runs at 230V and 13A, ~3kW max. The US is typically at 120V and 15A, 1.8kW max. Though 20A circuits exist, 2.4kW.

But US kettles are 1800W or less. Doesn’t matter what the circuit can support. Have a 240V plug wired from your oven or range circuit, then buy the UK version.

In Canada, the building code requires 20A sockets in kitchens. Obviously this only impacts new construction.

Continental Europe too. The first kitchen device I bought was a kettle.

You can make tea, coffee, cheap ramen, clean the drain… It’s universal!

How do you fit the kettle down the drain? ;)

You just have to push really hard.

In Australia, I only drink tea IF I’m feeling like it in winter which is it that often. Don’t drink coffee. And yet I’m still surprised it’s not something that’s in every house…

At least for me, it’s pretty pointless since I already have a kitchen appliance that spits out hot water relatively fast: the coffee machine

Our kettle died and I guess we didn’t replace it quick enough for my mother in law, because she showed up with a new one a few days later. Only cost a couple of dollars, but it’s been going strong for the last 6 years.

There’s a great video about why it isn’t widespread in the US on YouTube by Technology Connections.

There’s just not as many tea lovers here in the U.S. I think. I got one a couple of months ago though (I am a tea lover). Game changer.

The lack of tea lovers in the US is definitely the issue. Most grocery stores have disgusting low quality tea so most Americans don’t like tea. I’ve been sending family high quality tea for years now and they love it but can’t find anything remotely close locally.

I order loose online, but I’ve also found some bags that are quite good. Thompson’s Irish Breakfast is a personal favorite. Oh and I timed my kettle today; 1.5L takes 6:15 to boil.

I’m going to guess you’re in the States? I’m from England and live in the Netherlands. I’ve never met anybody ever who didn’t own a kettle. Is it true that it’s really not that common in the States to own a kettle?

I would say 20 years ago almost no one had an electric kettle in the US. Now they are much more common, but still only in a minority of homes. Americans just don’t drink nearly as much tea as the English. The UK consumes 1.94kg of tea per person annually. The US is 0.23kg. (per wikipedia). You will find a coffee maker in most homes and hotel rooms though.

In Canada, but we’re basically the same as the states. Of my extended family, which is 20+ people, I only know 2 who have kettles… So it’s a luxury to most people who come to my house lol.

We had a stove top kettle growing up but I never heard of an electric kettle until I was an adult. First time I saw one was a pretentious dude doing pour over coffee at work.

I’m the only person I know with an electric kettle, and I don’t use it much since I sopped doing pourover coffee.

I’m living in the US, I don’t drink tea and I have a coffee maker. Maybe getting one for cooking would be more energy efficient, I just never bothered to do it.

Americans. Us Brits seem to be one of the few countries where everyone has an actual kettle.

I’d compare it to having AC in your house: Most people in the US (and other countries) appear to have it, but they’re basically nonexistent over here.

I think they mean a powered kettle.

I’ve been to some places where smoke detectors aren’t required by law (or places where it is required by law but there isn’t anyone to enforce it). It’s weird AF.

Rikudou_Sage

Bought one when I bought a 3D printer. Haven’t needed it yet (the extinguisher).

One of the first projects when we bought our new house was to replace all the smoke alarms with smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and replace or introduce a fire extinguisher everywhere that needed one. It was a little expensive when it all adds up but well worth it.

Maybe specific, but if you do any DIY housework, get an endocscope. Baiscally, a 10 foot long flexible wire with a camera and light at the end. Uses your phone as a screen. Can be had for <$50. So many of my house projects would have been impossible without it. Also good for finding stuff under the couch.

These are sometimes referred to as borescopes rather than endoscopes.

Could’ve used one of these yesterday. My father-in-law needed help mounting a TV and we couldn’t find a stud to save our lives. We eventually discovered that the wall had deep studs due to ½ inch chipboard in addition to the ¾ inch drywall. We literally start randomly hammering nails into the wall to find the studs, which led us to that discovery.

I had something very similar - a wall with old wood paneling that had been painted so you can’t tell it’s wood paneling any more. My stud finder was having a hard time due to the thickness of the wood on top of the drywall. I drilled a hole and stuck my little USB camera in there. Life saver.

I recently bought a metal detector/stud finder for that exact reason. I also am an electrician and have to find studs or rebar often when drilling and it’s been great for that too. In your case it would work by detecting the nails in the studs instead of looking for the studs themselves. I got the Zircon Metalliscanner (I believe)

I think I was literally using that exact same stud finder. We were getting very sketchy hits on where the studs were located, so we started probing and found the issue.

I’m buying one now. Didn’t even occur to me but would be so helpful

Thanks, will check that out :-)

I got mine on AliExpress for looking at stuff behind the walls without making major holes. It was literally like $10.

didnt realize they were that affordable, i have unironically been in multiple situations where i thought “yeah i wish i had an endoscope rn”

I spent a lot of time in the middle east, so I’m going to say: Deodorant, not more perfume. Please.

Even better: an antiperspirant. It significantly lowers sweat production on the applied area.

Even better: wash yourself regularly and avoid synthetic fabric.

i’m very hesitant about this, we sweat for a reason.

I’d rather just get rid of the smell and deal with sweaty armpits, rather than risk overheating.

But it also has aluminium which might increase your chances of getting cancer.

Newer studies show that the intake of aluminium through your skin is very low and that there is no increased risk to your health. The risk from aluminium in food is higher.

Link to a PDF of the SCCS (Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety, European Commission): https://health.ec.europa.eu/system/files/2021-11/sccs_o_235.pdf

Conclusion: “… The SCCS considers that the systemic exposure to aluminium via daily applications of cosmetic products does not add significantly to the systemic body burden of aluminium from other sources. Exposure to aluminium may also occur from sources other than cosmetic products, and a major source of aluminium in the population is the diet. This assessment has not taken into account the daily dietary intake of aluminium.”

Ok, I’ll bite. How the heck is aluminum getting into my food?

Aluminum foil and containers, also lots of vegetables already have small amounts of aluminum in them.

I’ll bite

There’s your problem.

You mean anti-transpirant? Deodorant is often just perfume.

I will take BO over perfume all day everyday

The bidet was definitely one of those things I couldn’t ever see myself using until a friend gifted it to me and now I feel unclean every time I use a toilet without one.

But definitely jump for the one over $100, if you can. I have a Toto C5 and it’s pure fucking luxury. Heated seat, heated water, drying fan, user profiles, the whole nine yards.

Does it also play Africa while you clean your mrpoopybutthole? I see the clouds echoing tonight

God bless the rains over Africa

Oh, it’s not just rain tonight…

Sounds nice but it’s more than 10x the price of the bidet I got, which I’m really happy with. I doubt it’s going to be worth it but maybe one day I’ll try it and change my mind

I’d pay for one of them, but none of my toilets have outlets near them. The cost to wire them in isn’t worth it.

I have one fancy one and a bare bones model. I live in the mountains and we lose power often. The fancy one won’t even spray without power, which is why I bought the economy version. Honestly, I prefer the cheap one! Much more pressure and instant on-off are a good trade for a cold seat and cold water.

I’ve come to appreciate the cold water.

Especially after spicy food ;)

Cost me about $150 for the electrician

My friend came over and thought he’d roast me about having a bidet. I was just like go on walking around with your unwashed ass.

Real wisdom right here 🤙 only way to fly. I look down upon everybody going without.

Do you know what’s the difference between a bidet and ecowasher? I have a Toto ecowasher, I got the cheapest one but a year later didn’t know there was a better one with a bidet function for like another $15. I asked the sales person and they can’t answer it, but apparently it has two functions instead of one like I had. They’re both operated mechanically without electricity.

The Haynes manual for your car. Even if you’re not a mechanic they are so detailed they will walk you through fixing almost anything, they’re made for the laymen. I’m a diesel mechanic and even i own one for my cars.

When friends buy a new car i buy them a Haynes manual.

They don’t do them for ever single car in the world and the coverage isn’t as great on later model stuff but if you own s car 5 years or more old they’re great.

There’s no Ukrainian version as far as I can see

Though, I found similar mode on French site

Not my engine or gearbox tho, almost no parts fit from them… And it’s in French (:

Yeah thats common with these manuals anyways. I’ve probably owned a dozen over the years and they work great for high level issues but are pretty lacking in detail especially when you have 3-4 different versions of XYZ from the factory.

I’ve owned a manual for every car I’ve owned for the past twenty-five years and keep an OBDII scanner in all of our vehicles. General curiosity and concern for being broke down at an inopportune time makes it seem like a no-brainer. I have also made most of the repairs on my vehicle thanks to Haynes (and YouTube).

But then I have friends that couldn’t jump start if life depended on it. Seriously. They connected the cables to two random pieces of metal in the engine compartment and fried the whole computer and electrical sub systems. Over $12K in damage.

They don’t get a manual and they don’t want it. Even if you’re well off enough to pay for towing and hire out repairs, it absolutely blows my mind to think people wouldn’t want that security.

Holy shit I didn’t know about these books. Just checked for our family car, it is such a well written book!

Thank God I don’t own a car

An OBD scanner

A decent flashlight

A mini screwdriver set

A multimeter

An outlet polarity tester

These immediately come to mind.

Im a mechanic and own all ofnthese apart from the obd scanner, but my personal land cruiser produces flash codes along with my motorbikes.

But this is certainly a great list

$100 dollars worth of paperclips to jump pins on my OBD port

If you’re going to have a multimeter or do anything around electricity I’d say a non contact voltage sensor otherwise known as a “death” or “idiot” stick.

99 bucks

99.99 would be more profitable:-D
