This is bizarre. I hope they find peace. Idk how to not sound condescending when I say that.
If you’re really curious about this you can look into Meta’s shareholder statements. They’re a publicly traded company so these documents are available for everyone to see. But, yeah, long story short, it’s ads. Things like sponsored content (paying to push posts to people) is essentially just the platform itself doing it instead of using a third party.
For companies that aren’t publicly traded it’s trickier. A lot of privately traded companies are being propped up by VC funding. Many times they’ll operate at a loss to gain more users then worry about how to become profitable later. Bluesky is definitely such an example right now. They don’t run ads and don’t get money from users.
I view it as a thought terminating cliché people use when they’re too lazy ti fully explain themselves. It can be useful for things that are truly obvious, like if you try touching something fresh out of the stove without protection you’ll get burned, it doesn’t really add anything to bother explaining it.
I had some very similar feelings after the 2020 election cycle and COVID stuff. This VSauce video came out around the same time and, unironically I guess, helped convince me of some stuff I’d started to realize with regards to changing people’s minds. https://youtu.be/_ArVh3Cj9rw
How far is the foreign country? Until I read that I was going to suggest you still go to the ceremony but leave as soon as the reception begins. That way you could prevent long term regrets but also didn’t have to see him.
With stuff like this, what matters is you. Showing up to your brother’s wedding is not some sort of approval of his beliefs. If being around him makes you upset, don’t go. If you feel like going will stop you from feeling guilty for not going later, then consider going.
That’s basically been what I’ve been telling my wife with regards to whether or not to cut her father off and/or write him a letter explaining what she is so upset about. It’s easy to get lost in the details about how you should act (both vengefully or peacefully), but what matters is your mental health. If really feel the need to stick it to him and skip it then skip it.
As for asshole stuff, I guess it depends what your responsibilities in the wedding are (if any). Like if you are the best man you’re expected to help out a good bit. It might be too late to switch. Or if they paid for you and can’t transfer it get a refund then that makes it shittier to not go.
This is tricky and I don’t have a good answer.
Boomer is honestly just used as a generic term for older people who are out of touch in one way or another. Millennial was a generic term for young people the speaker didn’t like, but it’s finally been replaced by zoomer which is more age appropriate, but it took a long time. It’s not that people are ignoring Gen X, it’s that most of the time when people use the term they just mean older/younger people in general.
TLDR, Gen X is probably lumped in with the term “boomer” (obviously the context matters, but this is the TLDR).
Allow me to try and persuade you. The problem is bright blue LEDs. It’s still stupid that they make them so bright, but the problem isn’t the color. A hypothetical bright red, green, or amber LED would also be a problem.
