This thread led me down a bit of a rabbit hole, so I suppose I’ll post some of my meager findings.

Of course, the Wikipedia Article On The Guillotine includes a brief history documenting the evolution of it’s invention, but is sparse on the technical specifications, which online searches also turned up a bit sparse.

I did eventually land on this technical schematic PDF of the Guillotine from archive.org.

Somewhat amusing to find, you can also pay for the blueprints to creating a historically accurate replica guillotine here.

As a morbid aside, the Wikipedia article details under the Controversy Section the dispute as to whether a decapitated head remained alive shortly after the beheading and the eye witness account of someone witnessing the staring of a decapitated man’s eyes after calling out his name multiple times. The description is deliciously macabre.

Don’t think this really answered your question OP, but nevertheless, this was intriguing for me to look into, so thanks for sparking my curiosity with your post!

EDIT: Fixing various small typos.

Well its been a while, but it looks like proxygram no longer works. Guess stick with imginn.

Its not perfect, but you can anonymously browse Instagram using imginn.

There is also proxygram, which is similar to imginn, but if you don’t want to set up your own instance, you can use others via the Libredirect extension.

What opinions about the tech industry do you feel comfortable expressing here, but not in public/at work?
Short disclosure, I work as a Software Developer in the US, and often have to keep my negative opinions about the tech industry to myself. I often post podcasts and articles critical of the tech industry here in order to vent and, in a way, commiserate over the current state of tech and its negative effects on our environment and the Global/American sociopolitical landscape. I'm generally reluctant to express these opinions IRL as I'm afraid of burning certain bridges in the tech industry that could one day lead to further employment opportunities. I also don't want to get into these kinds of discussions except with my closest friends and family, as I could foresee them getting quite heated and lengthy with certain people in my social circles. Some of these negative opinions include: - I think that the industries based around cryptocurrencies and other blockchain technologies have always been, and have repeatedly proven themselves to be, nothing more or less than scams run and perpetuated by scam artists. - I think that the AI industry is particularly harmful to writers, journalists, actors, artists, and others. This is not because AI produces better pieces of work, but rather due to misanthropic viewpoints of particularly toxic and powerful individuals at the top of the tech industry hierarchy pushing AI as the next big thing due to their general misunderstanding or outright dislike of the general public. - I think that capitalism will ultimately doom the tech industry as it reinforces poor system design that deemphasizes maintenance and maintainability in preference of a move fast and break things mentality that still pervades many parts of tech. - I think we've squeezed as much capital out of advertising as is possible without completely alienating the modern user, and we risk creating strong anti tech sentiments among the general population if we don't figure out a less intrusive way of monetizing software. You can agree or disagree with me, but in this thread I'd prefer not to get into arguments over the particular details of why any one of our opinions are wrong or right. Rather, I'd hope you could list what opinions on the tech industry you hold that you feel comfortable expressing here, but are, for whatever reason, reluctant to express in public or at work. I'd also welcome an elaboration of said reason, should you feel comfortable to give it. I doubt we can completely avoid disagreements, but I'll humbly ask that we all attempt to keep this as civil as possible. Thanks in advance for all thoughtful responses.

I’m 40 and I still sleep on a futon. My back hurts if I use a normal bed…

Oof, if Lemmy started selling data, I’d be downtrodden. It has been a godsend to me that this place took off ever since Reddit shit the bed. I had an account from a while back and was able to essentially resume seamlessly.

I do all sorts of craziness to avoid my data being sold, but like most here, I do have some exceptions.

I keep my Google account for work, but use protonmail, invidious with/sponsorblock and yt-dlp, ddg lite/teddit for search, librewolf, ublock/noscript/etc. All on a Linux desktop with Mullvad VPN for when I need extra privacy (argh, matey).

Phone is Pixel with GrapheneOS and as much Fdroid over sandboxed Google Play as possible.

Exceptions made:

  • Google: Account for work and edge cases, (ie buying Pixel directly from them to leave OEM unlocking available).

  • LinkedIn: It’s just too prevalent for job hunting in my area, and Microsoft owns it and my data.

  • Github: Not much to say here, if you write/pull code, you use it, and Microsoft takes some data.

  • Steam: Again, not much to say, Id prefer offline, but triple A titles don’t do that as much on PC no more…

  • Meetup: Similar reason to LinkedIn, networking platforms.

  • Waze: I try to use OSM as much as possible, but Waze has better adjusting based off of Google owned traffic data.

  • Amazon: I actually use them less and less these days, but some things are just easier to get through.

Given Up:

  • Instagram: I’ve given up Instagram, which was hardest as many old friends and online acquaintances are on there. But I wasn’t posting any more and interaction was less and less.

  • Reddit: Gave up reddit for all the reasons for you’ve heard already. I actually used the official app and didn’t have a problem with it. But the politics of it rubbed me the wrong way. I’m still hoping the fediverse becomes the standard for social media online.

  • Microsoft Windows: Oh man, and Linux is king. MUCH better experience.

  • ios: Yeah, GrapheneOS drives me back to Google in a way, but it’s just a better experience for me than my old iPhone which is just far less customizable and limiting.

Ive been on Graphene OS for a few months now and can confirm that banking apps work, but Google Wallet does not. One of my banking apps required me to toggle off hardened malloc in favor of Android’s standard malloc though, which definitely had me raising an eyebrow.

Michael Pollen wrote a audible book about how modern capitalism wouldn’t have been possible without the invention of the light bulb and the abundance of caffeinated beverages as it facilitated a 24 hour economy. Literally titled Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World.

So what would happen if the government illegalized caffeine? I’d say they’d be more likely to prohibit literally any other drug including alcohol and tobacco. But if I were to indulge this hypothetical scenario, I’d say other new stimulants without any legal status would be invented to replace caffeine.

That’s very kind, but I doubt I would be able to moderate should it become even remotely popular.

The only thing I miss from reddit is the ability to use lemmy as a supplement to stack overflow. I still use teddit to occasionally find old posts on places like r/learnprogramming

I’m a junior web dev so I still benefit from old posts that answer basic questions, but I do wish I could just do a ddg lite search and be able to type in ‘lemmy’ and get the answer to my question.

Otherwise there’s just certain subreddits I wish there was a corresponding community here on Lemmy like specific Indie Video Games. These are small issues and I hope Lemmy popularity grows. Not just for my personal wants, but just cuz I like decentralized alternatives as their simply more authentic imho.

The ruling class is seeing the end of capitalism. They’re getting desperate and making it obvious.

Thanks for this extensive reply. Not the OP, but I’ve been slowly doing my research on this, and this gave me a good base of things to look into. Cheers!

I use a charcoal lined floss in a reusable glass container. For whatever reason I could never find a water flosser I liked.

I’d add a copper tongue scraper to the dental hygiene kit. That thing made my general plaque build up significantly less/reduced. Now I somehow feel unclean without it and a toothbrush on the tongue just doesn’t even come close.
