Have you seen what the cops here do to handcuffed people already on the ground? You’re fucked either way, may as well try to stay in a defensive posture with the ability to (try to) ward off physical attack.

Also, police confrontations aren’t known for creating calm environments. People make rash and sometimes unreasonable decisions when they are scared or feel threatened.

Sometimes, they give you conflicting orders like:

Cop A “On the ground NOW”

Cop B “Hands in the air!”

It may be intentional on their part so they can escalate due to non-compliance

short answer: fight, flight or freeze

i am not an American, and this has never happened to me before. but if i imagine myself in that situation, having a gun pointed at my face with someone shouting orders at me, i will freeze. i would not be able to comprehend the words coming from their mouths, and i will probably cry because i may never see my loved ones again.

it’s fine to ask questions, but i would suggest next time, don’t assume that people don’t care when they’re having a natural response to a fearful situation.

I’ll assume you’re asking in good faith. You know what’s I’ve always found interesting though? Nobody likes interacting with the police. I know some old churchy ladies that turn the other direction when they see a cop car. It says a lot about them that even the most law abiding, innocent citizens nope out when they see a LEO on the street.

ACAB and fuck the police; (more than) half of every dollar given to law enforcement should be taken and be used for healthcare, social services, and education. It’d actually alleviate a lot more issues than the dog-shooting, minority-beating, blue wall of silence gang we have in the U.S.

Why do people not follow the directives of the police in US?

Did you see the videos where several cops are screaming contradictory commands? Or impossible/unlawful commands?

When you yell at nervous people, they get more nervous, then confused and stressed.
