I once decommissioned a hard drive with shotgun slugs. Yes, this was in Texas.

Do you think bad weather is a good reason for moving?

I’m probably not your target demographic (I live in a campervan) but I move regularly to follow mild weather.

Not necessarily, it’s specific to one’s body chemistry.

Why would you ever want to peel them?

I used to eat the skins until my kidney stone went to the lab. No more skins or spinach for me. :-( Kidney stone pain is an amazingly-effective incentive for dietary change.

Why do people not follow the directives of the police in US?

Did you see the videos where several cops are screaming contradictory commands? Or impossible/unlawful commands?

Busiest one I read is probably uk.media.radio.archers about the BBC radio show

One of the posts on there today was about this article: https://www.theregister.com/2023/08/30/usenet_revival/

which seems optimistic but a man can hope

I logged into my Usenet provider yesterday. I read groups related to my hobbies, so not sure my recommendations would do you much good.

I live in a campervan and so have no temperature control in the traditional sense. Closest thing would be the Maxxfan with thermostatic fan control and it’s set to 68F. As long as external temps are lower than internal temps it does a reasonable job.

My favorite is bathrooms where you can stand at the urinal and make eye contact with people in the dining room everytime the door opens.

I was driving with a friend on in Louisiana about 3am one night in the late 90s. I thought I saw something ahead in the right lane so I moved into the left lane just in case.

As we got closer there was a giant shadow of some kind with only tiny reflectors at the edges. It was a HUGE matte black boat filling the lane on a matte black trailer with no plates. Closest comparison I can come up with would be one of those river patrol boats from the Vietnam war.

We were on cruise so it took a few seconds to pass them. The boat was being towed by a matte black F-550 (?) MDT with no plates and no lights other than headlights.

I did not look up at the driver when we passed. I have no idea if this was a drug thing, an intel thing, or what.

What is your opinion on men that make use of sex worker services?

Same as any other business transaction.

Typing on a phone is terrible for writing more than a few sentences.

A bluetooth keyboard might be helpful here.

I like cars and other vehicles. I dislike low-skilled drivers and a-holes (the two often overlap).

UTVs are fine, same as any other tool. But for whatever reason UTVs seem to attract a higher percentage of poorly-behaved owners. I suspect its because, unlike dirt bikes and similar, you can operate them with zero skills and not immediately suffer injury or death. And there is a cupholder for your beer, a cooler for the beers-in-waiting, and a place for speakers to blast one’s music into the wilderness.

Informally, I have observed that jerky/destructive behavior is correlated with the square feet of flag flown from the back of the UTV (regardless of the flag’s message).

The polar opposite appears to be adventure bike riders, who tend to be highly-skilled and considerate of others. I have never been dusted by a high-speed flyby from an ADV rider, or seen one deliberately rut out a wet trail. “Woo-hoo, looka muh roost!”

To be fair: I have seen UTVs used by talented and considerate individuals. Skillfully navigating terrain that it was hard for me to walk up with trekking poles, and leaving no visible damage. More power to 'em, and I hope they encourage the miscreants to behave better on public lands.

  • drivers of lifted trucks
  • drivers of UTVs
  • owners of vehicles with obnoxious exhausts or stereos
  • people who park their shopping carts next to other carts in the aisle so no one can pass. Also accepted: walking three-abreast in the aisle.

This is far as I can go in the list without risking a stroke.

PSA for boondockers: plan to be emplaced before the Saturday, Oct 14th eclipse
Not only is it [a weekend](https://img.mousetrap.net/misc/weekenders.jpg), but the so-called "Ring of Fire" eclipse will be visible from states where boondocking is common: >> The narrow path of annularity begins in Oregon and crosses Northern California, Nevada, Utah, northeastern Arizona, southwestern Colorado, New Mexico and Texas - [livescience](https://www.livescience.com/space/the-sun/ring-of-fire-solar-eclipse-2023-how-to-watch-in-person-and-virtually) Be prepared for a deluge of casual campers looking for spots from which to ~~burn their eyes out~~ watch the eclipse.

Today's lunch and dinner were dictated by logistics * good sun * a bag of Mexican squash I got for 99c (manager's discount for blem items) * fridge is very full from [yesterday's reprovisioning](https://mouse.mousetrap.net/blog/2023-08-02-personal-record---4-weeks-without-reprovisioning.html#reprovisioning) and needs some relief. I used half of a sausage to make room. Made two meals, $1.37 each [pics and brief write-up](https://mouse.mousetrap.net/cooking/recipes/recipesInstantpot.html#mexican-squash-and-andouille-sausage)

personal record - 4 weeks without reprovisioning
I usually stay out in 14d stretches. Because of the heat I was staying in one place for 28d and lived to tell the tale. Bonus story about a dumb-ass sensor design not letting the vehicle lock.

Van cooking: breakfast hashbrowns from leftover baked potatoes
I "baked" some whole potatoes in the IP yesterday (17mins at pressure, didn't measure the Wh) and ate some with butter and sour cream. This morning I peeled the leftover potatoes, diced them for hash browns. Sauteed 1/4 onion in the pan over the small 300w hot plate, then added pots, salt, pepper, and cooked them until they started to brown. Added a bit of shredded cheese. [pic](https://img.mousetrap.net/2023/IMG_20230725_091458~2.jpg) Hearty with this morning's creekwater coffee. Total time on the hotplate was 25 mins, so 125Wh.

Van cooking: hot water cornbread in a sandwich press
> AKA corn pone, corn dodgers, etc. ~35Wh per patty... Not quite as tasty or crisy as pan-fried, but easier and no grease spatter.

I had iffy results cooking biscuits in a flat pan and in [a dogbowl oven](https://mouse.mousetrap.net/cooking/dogbowl.html). This morning I tried some Pilsbury biscuit mix in a sandwich press. Worked out pretty good. ~40Wh. [Details here](https://mouse.mousetrap.net/cooking/recipes/recipesSandwichpress.html) if anyone is interested in this approach.

failed experiment: scrambled eggs for bf burritos in Instant Pot mini
>> I often cook a chub of sausage then add egg to it to make breakfast burritos. In this case I had 1/2lb of sausage cooked (refrigerated leftovers). I mixed up 6 eggs and poured over the crumbled sausage... 120Wh to cook, although it took a couple tries. Another 65Wh to heat the tortillas on the mini-hotplate. I don't think the energy savings is worth the trouble.

1. [sprouted](https://rvwiki.mousetrap.net/doku.php?id=food:sprouting) mung beans, ~2.5 days 1. salt, pepper 1. added a couple ounces of smoked sausage (like eckrich) 1. pressure cooked pot-in-pot for 4 minutes 1. natural release 80Wh, 30mins total (13mins cooking + 17mins natural release)

[[originally posted](https://www.reddit.com/r/CookingInCars/comments/14qu0pc/knorr_herb_and_rice_in_rice_cooker_vs_instant_pot/?) to reddit] Summary: the IP took about 1/3rd the energy, 1/2 the time, and 3/4 the water. Downside, took about 2 1/2 times the wattage (and therefore current). I do not recommend people build big power systems capable of greater current, but *if you already have such a system* a pressure cooker can save energy (Watt-hours). * [more info](https://mouse.mousetrap.net/cooking/recipes/recipesInstantpot.html#knorr) on the instant pot approach * [blog entry](https://mouse.mousetrap.net/blog/2021-07-13-misc---beans-knorr-popcorn-site-change-.html#knorr-mushroom-rice-in-the-rice-cooker) about rice cooker version ---- ^1^ appliance only, not including inverter losses ^2^ natural pressure release

What does the term "Vanlife" mean to you?
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/938907 > Okay, it seems like this is quite an aged discussion. How would you define the term “vanlife”? Also, I’m aware that many individuals dislike it. > > Is the label exclusively reserved for full-time van dwellers? > > Personally, I align more with being a weekender, despite having traveled extensively for several months. Where would you set the boundary in this regard? > > Or is it primarily about the conduct of individuals while they are traveling?

I used to have a Coleman folding oven I used for stuff like this, then foolishly gave it away before moving into the van. I've tried [baking biscuits in a dogbowl oven](https://mouse.mousetrap.net/blog/2021/05/02/dogbowl-oven-biscuit-experiments-1-4/) and [on a flat pan](https://mouse.mousetrap.net/blog/2023-01-15-experiment--Pilsbury-Cheddar-Garlic-biscuit-mix-on-pan-and-in-dogbowl-oven-.html) with mixed results. - Nostalgia MyMini sandwich press, part of [my gear for cooking with excess solar power](https://mouse.mousetrap.net/cooking/#electric-cooking) - Walmart Great Value jumbo biscuits - 40-something Wh. My Kill-a-Watt could only show 0.04kWh so it was somewhere between 40-50Wh. Quite tasty, I ate them without butter or jelly. These are the best so far. There's a stripe in them because the sandwich grill has a diagonal line in it for making triangular sammiches.
