I downvote all the +1 spam that basically just says “I agree” or “I like this”. Just upvote instead of adding noise to the comments.

its engagement! shows the community is alive

Yea … I’d say don’t underestimate the power of a simple response to give a sense of acknowledgement to someone.

Over on mastodon, this was born out by people trying to understand what to do with “likes”. As there’s no algorithm, “likes” don’t “do” anything. Except, you get notifications everytime someone likes one of your posts, which you can filter out if they’re too numerous. The notifications also tell you who “liked” you post. People realised it’s a rather pleasant, nice and convenient way of letting people know that you read, absorbed and literally liked someone’s post. And as the recipient, it’s nice and reassuring to get these notifications. It lets you know that you’re not screaming into the void.

Here on lemmy I personally miss this and sometimes manually check the votes on a post/comment to see if anyone has read something I’ve written. It’d be nice if lemmy had something similar to the effect of simply personal “like” that mastodon has.

I upvote things I like, and I downvote people being twats.

I also downvote people whining about downvotes.

Sausage fingers + laggy phone. Sometimes I accidentally upvote or downvote while trying to scroll down. I remove the downvote when I realize but I’m pretty sure I must have left some around

You’re asking for a very specific answer to something that doesn’t necessarily have a specific reason.

Obviously not everybody is going to agree on stuff, whether by mood or not agreeing with the info, or not liking the tone, or thinking a joke is bad, and that is way better than everybody having the same thoughts about what everybody says all the time. Obviously there are instances where it’s really a mark of a shit person to downvote (i.e. “I hope people having a hard time find happiness”) but anything else is no holds barred. We’re not a monolith.

I’m asking “what’s the deal” … ie, what story can you tell as to why you’ve been one of the few downvoters. Didn’t mean to suggest there’s only one reason for all instances of such behaviour … that’d be silly.

Yea he’s being really sassy. Like someone forced him to smell their fart and now he’s in denial and can’t accept it

Removing as it’s not an open question and because we have lots of discussions around downvoting.

There aren’t enough upvotes to go around. So a few unlucky souls have to be downvoted. The problem is only going to get worse unless we downvote half the population. Randomly and dispassionately of course. Those who survived could experience an internet with bountiful upvotes, never a complaint about the lack of upvotes or the presence of downvotes. We just have to downvote half the population.

What do you mean no shame?

This sounds like a question for here.

I myself have only given maybe two.

What do you mean exactly though I’m kinda confused. Give it to me straight
