I live an increasingly confusing double life as TeaHands the game dev, and TheGiddyStitcher, multicrafter extraordinaire!
Currently working on my first ever commercial indie game, a minimalist city builder.
I’m procrastinating, so let’s do some maths.
Over the 4 accounts I’ve had in my time here (Beehaw > lemm.ee, this one on .world + a backup mod account on Blahaj) my totals are:
Original cake day was June 4th, so I make that 60 days.
Thus averaging 1.28 posts and 36 comments per day. Jesus. I regret working that out.
I see we’re all shilling the communities we mod, which makes sense if you think about it. So in that vein:
For more gamedev-related communities we’ve got a sticky post here, and for more crafting communities of all shapes and sizes there’s one here!
Apart from those I’ve been hanging around in !ukcasual@lemmy.world since both my and its very first day here on Lemmy. Like the name suggests, basically just casual UK chatter without the scourge of politics. Lots of moaning about the weather.
!discworld@lemmy.ml could do with more Pratchett fans finding it, it’s been pretty dead for the last month (not entirely surprising though as the subreddit wasn’t huge either).
And another shoutout to !anarchychess@sopuli.xyz because LOL.
It’s community. But to answer your main question:
I’m a small-time YouTuber who relies on the ad money to an extent.
My take is that if you like what I do, can’t afford a donation, but don’t want to sit through ads, first of all I’m still happy you’re there and enjoying the content. Even the view itself is valuable in a small way, algorithm-wise.
Secondly though there are plenty of other things you can do that help bring in more viewers who might be able and willing to support monetarily. Sharing videos, commenting and liking on new videos to give them that initial bump, recommending the channel when it’s relevant to a conversation. In my case, taking a free pattern I’ve made available for you to follow along with a tutorial video, and making sure to give credit when you make the project. Etc etc.
It genuinely all helps and although my YT friends are all small-time like me, there’s not a single one of us that doesn’t appreciate our regular viewers regardless of whether they actually earn us money.
Moved from pc to laptop about a decade ago and I don’t think I could ever go back. It seemed so normal back then to spend all my time in one room at my desk.
But now, yeah I can spend time at the desk and I can even plug the laptop in to external everything and it’s just like having a pc. But ALSO I can laze around on the couch watching TV with my other half while I play Deep Rock Galactic, or I can lounge in the sun in the conservatory and still edit video, or I can pick up and take it on a trip somewhere and still have access to everything I need without having to fiddle with a phone.
The only downside of a laptop is the cost compared to a similar spec pc. But when I think of going back I think of being chained to a desk in that one room and just…nah.
Everything.
Like, I’m talking to you now from the back bedroom of a random house in a small isolated town in the north east of England, and you could be anywhere. Travelling on a train is crazy fast. There are SO MANY leaves on that tree. Dogs are the best and there’s no way humanity deserves them. Isn’t it cool that we invented bread? My travel mug can keep hot tea at an acceptable drinking temperature for hours. Hugs are amazing. Windows are insane.
Sometimes I have to take motion sickness pills and they make me a bit loopy to the point where I start to really notice things around me, haha.
It’s one of those use-cases (and I understand why it’s not a thing, but still) where I’d love to have quote toots. Just being able to share the Mastodon version of a post but add a bit of text and hashtags and stuff so people on there see it and can easily interact with it. Commenting works but is a bit awkward on one side and a bit spammy on the other.
So many ways the integration could eventually go! But what we do already have is still pretty cool, just gonna keep experimenting with the best way to get people talking to each other.
Anyway consider me a recruit to your Lemmy/Mastodon crosspost revolution! 😄
You’ve articulated my thoughts perfectly and emboldened me not only to keep doing it, but to do it way more.
The trickiest part so far has been wording toots in such a way that they still look and read like Mastodon content, but also are in the correct format for Lemmy. Also the fact that I recently moved from an instance with an extra-long character limit to one with the default, but such is life lol.
Until recently it was impossible to browse All due to an issue where it would auto-refresh the feed with multiple posts every second. This and similar issues necessitated a big rewrite to move away from websockets.
Then that was fixed, but it was fixed the same week as the Reddit API went down, so making sure everything was stable and stopped setting on fire under the unprecedented load became priority.
All kinds of other things are still going on, for example there are continuing issues with federation not working as expected which is literally the main feature of Lemmy.
Devs have to prioritise, and “nice to have” features might be a way down their list. That is ultimately the answer to the question in your title.
That’s true, I choose to believe that nagging gamedev newbies to use version control and posting photos of random yarn tangles is officially a public service. Thank you for the new perspective 🫡
