Psst if you want newbie oriented advice ask on !newtolemmy@lemmy.ca

One piece of advice as a freebie: Don’t judge yourself too hard if an honest and genuine comment you make now-and-then gets downvoted. Often times the best thing to do is just to move on. You can try to reach a mutual understanding through conversation, but recognize the signs when a back-and-forth isn’t leading anywhere productive and simply back off.

I had very recently come across a reactionary content left-wing YouTube channel, reacting to Rachel Maddow of MSNBC reacting to Elon Musk’s interview… I thought that was pretty bizarre. (link).

It was a 30 second intro segment, then a 8 minute clip of the Maddow show, followed by a 1 minute outro commentary segment.

Make sure you check out places like !piracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com, on there and other communities on that site there be many a sailor like you. What’s better is you can participate without having to make a new account!

Senators (in the US) are elected representatives of their state. Sen. Booker, through his 25 hour speech, brought his constituents’ message to the forefront, criticized the Senate, Democrats’ and his own failures to act. He got millions of people to look at Senate business as if he was a professional streamer which is usually boring stuff. The speech is Booker’s answer to “what can I do at this moment to make a difference?”, which hopefully will get others to ask the same of themselves.

It’s impossible to measure the true impact of the speech afterward, but it’s intended to inspire people to take action, resist the Trump monarchy, and cause “good trouble” where they can. Who knows whether this has had any influence on the Wisconsin Supreme Court which was a humiliation to Musk, or if it had any influence on the 4 Republican Senators joining Democrats to pass a resolution nullifying the false emergency against Canada?

Mark my words: Office Online will “adopt” these advertising and cloud-save only features within 2 years.

(If this happens and I remember this comment I will try to link it).

On thinking before you speak, it means this: if something is said that makes you want to respond right away, when you sense a physical reaction (of hurt, anger, sadness or wanting retribution), or you are in a situation where what you say matters a lot (an interview, a meeting with higher-ups in a company etc.), it’s a mental cue for you to block immediate responses which can cause you to run your mouth in ways you later regret. Instead, you actively make an effort to listen more, and consider your situation and the other people’s situation before responding. So it’s not a 15 second pause after each sentence, but a 15 seconds you take while the other person is going on about whatever before you inject yourself into a conversation or before you make your point when it’s your turn.

On interacting with your coworkers, they’re not your therapists, so you can talk about what’s new and the fortunate and unfortunate things that happen to you over the course of a week, but the basic idea is to avoid making your problems their problems when you do.

I’m of a more positive nature but I love to info-dump on my coworkers about my favourite topics. I try to offset that by involving them and asking their opinion, showing them cool things, and then taking the turn to let them discuss their own intersts and thoughts on things, and follow up with that. And I try to get a sense if they aren’t interested in talking at a particular moment or are losing interest in the middle of a conversation. EQ skills are about taking that pulse.

If you need a place to start: The idea is give and take, and it should be in relatively equal amounts. Would you be able to tell me what has been on the minds lately of Coworkers 1-3? Or have you spent most of the conversation about yourself and your issues? (#4 doesn’t sound interested much in sharing their personal life, so you don’t have to probe them on it).

On Mastodon, use hashtags fedihire and hiring, look for getfedihired hashtag to find prospective applicants.

Monday, it would be too much of a coincidence to see a lot of my coworkers missing at the same time, and seeing people talk to nobody beside them would make me think I’m going crazy.

On the weekend I’m not forced to interact with anyone so I could feasibly go without noticing.

Peertube (Youtube-like) and Loops (Tiktok-like) and Pixelfed (Instagram-like Photosharing service) are growing.

Lol if I had truly infinite money, this is a story of what I would do.

I would first have a “magical investment bank” that would promise 200% per annum with interest paid monthly, but only if paid in cash and at least 50 million to start. Have this scheme open for a few months with actual results and interest paid out. This is to get billionaires and megacorps to liquidate their assets into soon to be worthless monetary instruments. Then, everyone in the world but the top 0.1% would get 1 trillion. Everyone’s debt is virtually erased, and the old top 0.1% can go ahead, get their money back and feel bad about themselves. With all currency effectively rebased to a billion times than previously, now we can work on solving the world’s problems as shoulder-to-shoulder equals. Give the world food, give the world shelter, give the world healthcare, give the people of the world a purpose, give the people socioeconomic freedom, give them trains, give the world a chance at reversing disastrous effects of climate change.

If it didn’t work, then my money would be just as worthless any way (unless my infinite money powers could manifest in bottle caps or whatever the newest thing people found value in was).

A metal doorknob works for me usually.

Play the demo for Tap Tap Revenge and Temple Run that’s what I did back when it was in style…

Unethical Idea for OP: create a botnet to ddos, spam, mine crypto or hack passwords! Give life to your old iPad (and other people’s too!)

I’d say whether you feel happy, or sad, in the evenings, try write down how you feel and why you think you feel that way in a notebook. If you look back at it the next morning you can see why you were happy and maybe it may lift your spirits, or if you were sad you can re-affirm why it wasn’t such a big deal (or just leave your sad thoughts away in there).

The biggest thing is talking to people about their thoughts on a subject. Bots can’t do that (…yet?)

lemmit.online should serve your Reddit needs… I just find that automated post copiers or serial reposters don’t add value to a discussion. They never reply to comments for example.

Lemmy flourishes by being its own thing, why would it need to perpetually be in Reddit’s shadow?

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ca/post/1543761 > Got this from a post on the alien site. From previous discussion on Lemmy it sounded like Linux users had good things to say about this game but were discouraged about the upcoming FaceIt implementation such that they wouldn't be able to join anticheat enabled matches. Those users and Linux gamers on the fence would probably appreciate hearing this news. > > With this announcement on the dev team's community Discord, it appears Linux users will NOT lose access to matches with anticheat. > > Source: https://discord.com/channels/303681520202285057/345616096470237186/1129780379218358282 > (BattleBit Remastered official Discord server)
