Yet another refugee who washed up on the shore after the great Reddit disaster of 2023
There’s a saying, something like “When you’re used to privilege, equality feels like oppression.” It’s the same with white folks who feel like it’s a big deal when there’s more than a token POC in something. It must be DEI, right?
I’m a straight, white, middle class male, but I’m fully aware that my life experience is much different from so many other peoples’. And I’ve never understood why some people feel like it takes away from them when someone else gets something, like the straight folks who feel like it takes away from straight marriage if gay folks can marry.
People are weird.
I’m also a prolific commentor. I’m unlikely to comment on something like an AITA post that was copied from elsewhere by a bot, but that hesitation doesn’t apply if it’s like a news item or a meme. Maybe if there are suddenly hundreds in a row I’d be less likely.
Even on Reddit, much of that kind of content originated on Facebook, Twitter, or whatever.
This is correct. It’s worth noting that there are some communities that it’s probably fine for. If you’re posting news, memes or gifs, it doesn’t matter where they come from and it’s a much different thing than posting a question. But there are reams of bot-posted content in discussion communities that have zero comments and end up reducing engagement when people see all those.
Let’s say Andy is on the Andy-instance, Beth is on the Beth-instance, and Charlie is on the Charlie-instance. The Charlie-instance has a community called Something-Cool, and all three people are subscribed to it. Beth makes a new post in Something-Cool. The “real” version of the post is on Charlie-instance because that’s where the community is, but the Lemmy software on Andy-instance and Beth-instance makes a copy of the post locally. Andy comments on the post, which happens on his local instance, but the software synchs up his comment with the “real” version of the post on Charlie-instance.
Now let’s say that Andy-instance defederates from Charlie-instance. That means that the copying and syncing no longer happen between those two instances. There’s already a copy of Beth’s post on Andy-instance, and that doesn’t get removed, but if anyone else comments on that post, Andy will never see it because his instance isn’t connected to the “real” version. He could make another comment on the post, because it’s still on his instance, but his comment won’t get synced to the “real” version, so it will never get synced to any other instances either, because they always take from the “real” version. Other people on Andy-instance will see Andy’s new comment because it’s on their home instance.
Still a matter of degrees. Smart phones were 57% of the market in 2013. Not sure what point of sale system advancements in the last decade you’re talking about that are very revolutionary - we’ve certainly had online connected credit cards systems for decades. Really, all those things are pretty evolutionary in the span we’re taking about, with AI poised to be the most impactful for hasn’t been in the period.
I think none of it is actually on .world, it’s almost all on lemmynsfw.com and a couple others.
The gore (or, at least, deaths, is in c/Ukraine. I’d rather see the porn though.
I’ll be surprised if that option isn’t coming soon, a lot of people have asked for it. In the meantime, there’s a profile setting for not showing NSFW content if that helps. Oh, and I’m betting that, like with Reddit, a giant percentage of the NSFW content comes from a much smaller set of communities, so you might try blocking those to at least reduce it.
Of course, who else is going to take care of me when I have Alzheimer’s?
Seriously, my mom died of Alzheimer’s, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I’m going to get it. And we’re not talking about a disease that someone is going to suffer from their whole lives. If you had your kids at 25, they’d be 40 when you got Alzheimer’s.
It’s a completely shitty disease, especially for the family, but you’re going to die of something, and some of the options are worse still.
Most cheese molds, at least on harder cheeses, are pretty benign. Some are even left to mold intentionally. If you see some mold, you’re probably not going to be able to get rid of all of it - it goes deeper then deeper than you’d think. But it’s probably fine to eat as long as that doesn’t bother you (I do it all the time).
It’s safety for sure. Mine is pretty new and I can tell that it has a sensor for the drum rotating - it doesn’t unlock until movement has stopped. You could really mangle a finger if you got it caught between the moving drum and the stationary housing. The bitch is that mine is energy efficient and it spins easily, so a heavy load will keep spinning a long time.
Not only do I not miss it, I’m relieved that it’s not here.
