Fuck

Perhaps one of the most interesting and colorful words in the English language today is the word β€œfuck”.

It is a magical word which, just by its sound can describe pain, pleasure, love, and hate. In language, β€œfuck” falls into many grammatical categories.

It can be used as a verb both transitive (John fucked Mary) and intransitive (Mary was fucked by John).

It can be an action verb (John really gives a fuck),

a passive verb (Mary really doesn’t give a fuck),

and adverb (Mary is fucking interested in John),

or as a noun (Mary is a terrific fuck).

It can also be used as an interjection (Fuck! I’m late for my date with Mary).

It can even be used as a conjunction (Mary is easy, fuck she’s also stupid).

As you can see there are very few words with the overall versatility of the word fuck.

Aside from its sexual connotations, this word can be used to describe many situations:

  1. Greetingsβ€¦β€œHow the fuck are ya?”

  2. Fraudβ€¦β€œI got fucked by the car dealer.”

  3. Resignationβ€¦β€œOh, fuck it!”

  4. Troubleβ€¦β€œI guess I’m fucked now.”

  5. Aggressionβ€¦β€œFuck you!”

  6. Disgustβ€¦β€œFuck me.”

  7. Confusion…" What the fuck…?"

  8. Displeasureβ€¦β€œFucking shit man…”

  9. Lostβ€¦β€œWhere the fuck are we?”

10.Disbeliefβ€¦β€œUnfuckingbelievable!”

11.Retaliationβ€¦β€œUp your fucking ass!”

  1. Apathyβ€¦β€œWho really gives a fuck?”

  2. Suspicionβ€¦β€œWho the fuck are you?”

  3. Directionsβ€¦β€œFuck off.”

It can be maternalβ€¦β€œMotherfucker!”

It can be used to tell timeβ€¦β€œIt’s four fucking twenty!”

It can be used as an anatomical descriptionβ€¦β€œHe’s a fucking asshole.”

Lastly, it has been used by many notable people throughout history:

This is a lovely write-up! I have one nit to pick: I think β€œMary was fucked by John” is a passive-voice use of the transitive verb. OTOH β€œThis guy fucks.” is unambiguously intransitive.

Also in β€œJohn really gives a fuck,” and β€œMary really doesn’t give a fuck,” fuck is a noun and the verb is give

I can hear this comment

I wrote a paper in AP composition on the history of β€œFuck, shit, and piss” for an assignment. I had a very laid back teacher, and the only reason that I didn’t receive an β€œA” was because I used a couple of the words in context to close out the essay, β€œthat’s the end of this fucking shit.” lol

I’m in my mid-30’s and I still giggle like a child when I see it. I don’t care how infantile it is, I like what I like.

Butt and Boobs also get honourable mentions.
