DDOS attacks. see the admin post for more info https://lemmy.world/post/2923697
Apparently unrelenting DDOS attack, possibly because they defederated from some instances.
Yea the admins noted recently that whoever is running the attacks knows about lemmy’s weak spots, so it tracks that it’s a disgruntled user base. That being said, I wouldn’t underestimate how easy it is for someone with a chip on their shoulder to figure out these weak spots, so it could be anyone really.
wasn’t us
Gotta say … I’m loving the hexbear culture/habit of speaking meme/custom-emoji all the time.
How is it working exactly … is it all the custom-emoji facility that lemmy (apparently) has or is it something custom hexbear are running?
Custom emojis are supported in regular lemmy. However, it’s up to the admins of your instance to make some available. If the admins don’t add any, the emoji picker just has boring normal emojis.
Hexbear’s custom frontend has an emoji picker. All it actually does is insert a link to an image in the comment for you
I’m not sure if lemmy can do this natively now, but that’s how we do it
It’s default lemmy (at least for version
0.18.X
, AFAIK) to have that same emoji picker … mine just doesn’t have any of the custom emojis you have … but adding them is a thing I think for default lemmy, just not sure.Yes, open-sourced. SQL database. Most likely people who have gripes with lemmy.world.
I haven’t noticed an issue, I connect through a different instance.
If you’re having problems, definitely make an account on a smaller instance and migrate your subs using LASIM.
You’ll have a much better experience.
Have an account there, 50% of the time the instance has some sort of issue.
The fact that it’s just lemmy.world and not other instances being attacked, shows some kind of personal gripe
It’s nice that this attack could only affect one server and not the entire site. This is a great in that it proves stability
It’s nice, but a more centralized website would have worked essentially the same.
For the future, !outoftheloop@lemmy.world
lemmy world is very unstable. I recommend getting off lemmy.world into other smaller instances.
This post breaks rules 1 and 3, but basically what the other comments said. It’s the biggest instance so it’s the biggest target. Some weeks ago there was a guy squatting community names and they got banned, after which they spammed new communities with random names, and the instance has been DDOS’d repeatedly. TBH no hard feelings towards lemmy.world, but I’ve switched to another one, used lemmy-migrate, and just resumed my scrolling. It’s not really worth it to stay there at the moment.
