I’m having trouble finding good communities, please suggest some based on the category.

I’d recommend going on lemmyverse.net/communities and looking up topics you are interested in. It’s much easier to find communities like that.

One fun one for me: !futurama@lemmy.world

A well run instance that I go to for science-y communities: https://mander.xyz/communities

Do you mean communities?

Yes

I don’t actually care on what instance a community is hosted. They are all federated either way…

I’ve found most of the Communities I subscribe to through meta-communities like:
!newcommunities@lemmy.world
!trendingcommunities@feddit.nl

I’d be interested to see if anyone has found other meta-communities.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen anything of interest to me in All (which I try to avoid anyways, 'cos it feels like browsing by All is the first sign of an addiction or something)

I look forward to the trending communities post every day

Not sure how to format it for you but there’s a place for listing communities on kbin.social called MagHub.

(Link for us is @MagHub)

Oh cool, thanks. (That link works for us on Lemmy too).

!foss@beehaw.org | it’s great for Free and Open Source software.

!plugins@sh.itjust.works | Great for those looking for Lemmy Plugins & Userscripts.

!pcmasterrace@lemmy.world | For all things PC and PC enthusiasts.

!til@lemmy.world | Today I Learned, but on Lemmy.

There are many others, a lot of the other comments have provided community searching tools, so I’ll leave my contributions at these four.

To find a good instance, you can just check this site: https://join-lemmy.org/instances - I’d suggest reading the description of an instance and then browsing the home feed of that instance to see if you like it.

For communities, you can just switch your feed to “all” and browse through posts and see what interests you, then follow that community it was posted in.

A loosely moderated place to ask open-ended questions

Search asklemmy 🔍

If your post meets the following criteria, it’s welcome here!

  1. Open-ended question
  2. Not offensive: at this point, we do not have the bandwidth to moderate overtly political discussions. Assume best intent and be excellent to each other.
  3. Not regarding using or support for Lemmy: context, see the list of support communities and tools for finding communities below
  4. Not ad nauseam inducing: please make sure it is a question that would be new to most members
  5. An actual topic of discussion
