Can you elaborate on what that means? ā€œUniverse is not locally realā€? How do we know what is real? What precisely does ā€˜local’ mean? Real relative to what?

I need to go to bed, I misread that as ā€œAhsoka is simultaneously the northernmost, westernmost, *andā€ easternmost US state."

You should try Space Engine. It’s a program to explore the universe, based on real telescope data. It also has the ability to procedurally generate galaxies, planets, and stars in unobserved parts of the universe.

There’s a giant ball of extremely hot plasma in the sky and we aren’t supposed to look at it. What is it hiding? Surely if someone managed to look at it long enough, they would see the truth!

I’m looking for a gun that makes holes, but not bullet holes. You’ll figure it out.

Basically that. I don’t want to say ā€˜bad parenting’, because my own parents basically never spoke to me about this stuff at all and I don’t think it negatively affected me at all. I think they just observed that I didn’t really need them to have that talk, and so didn’t bother. In my case, it worked out. But for many kids it might not.

On a moral level, I do agree with keeping children from accessing certain content online, especially porn. I think I’d be happier if I porn was less accessible to me until I had the mental faculties to understand it.

On a practical / policy level, I disagree since there is no way to stop children from accessing this content without drastically hampering the freedoms of all people. I see no good solutions. I really feel bad for parents who have to raise kids in the internet age.

How do the demographics of Lemmy differ from those of Reddit?
I've noticed that technology discussion is more commonplace on Lemmy than I remember from Reddit. In what other ways might our demographics be different than Reddit and from other sites?

Yes, but I think Defcon is mostly for cybersecurity. I think OP is looking for something a bit more generalized.

Instructions unclear. Am I supposed to ignore the post entirely, or just your instructions to ignore the post?

And, of course, it is (or will soon be) defederated by much of the Fediverse since we want nothing to do with Meta/Facebook.

Reddit has long been known for its userbase being capable of surprisingly big things. Getting John Oliver to AMA here might show that Lemmy is capable of the same thing.

He absolutely would be a great pick. And I suspect he would be interested. What I wonder is: how much would it grow Lemmy and the Fediverse? Impossible to tell, but even if it’s only a small gain, I think it would be worth trying.
