Federation is a tool to connect instances together. If one instance isn’t being run in a way that you like, you can and should create an account on a different instance that better aligns with your ideals. Is this true?? I always assumed that electric ranges simply had a variable duty cycle controlled by the knob. That would mean that if you want to get a pot up to a specific temperature, the fastest way is to set the knob to high until you reach the temperature, then reduce the knob to the desired temperature.

This is different from how an HVAC works, where you set an actual temperature and the HVAC runs until that temperature is reached.

But I could be totally wrong about how electric ranges work.

Parker, specifically the Jotter. I still have and use a stainless steel one that I bought in 1999 because I kept losing pens, and I thought that if I spent a little more on one I might take better care of it. It’s my favorite by far.

“Echo chamber” definitely has a negative connotation, which is why I don’t think the specific-purpose group is acting as an echo chamber at least not insofar as they are keeping the group on-topic.

I’m assuming this is meant to be an example of a real-world scenario, and I suspect it would be helpful to hear the actual scenario so that we can comment on the nuances of the specifics rather than wondering if the nuances of the example are relevant or not.

But, to take your example at face value: no, I don’t believe the expelled rose-lover is correct about the tulip lover’s club being an echo chamber. The tulip lover’s club is about tulips… it’s in the name, and that’s why it’s members gather there. The rose-lover is coming in talking off-topic to the point that the members of the tulip lover’s club have found it distracting. It’s nothing to do with an echo chamber. I would probably expel someone from my chess club if they showed up and constantly tried to get everyone to play monopoly instead.

If everything prior to you exiting your front door is identical between WFH and commuting, then yes. But if you spend more time getting ready to go into the office than you do for WFH, then I think you have to count that getting ready time as well.

It’s important to remember that Lemmy and the Fediverse is a community, just like reddit is a community. Each of those communities behaves differently and has different expectations. Once you learn the community and the expectations, it becomes a lot easier to understand what you should and should not post.

Loans are different from lines of credit… loans don’t have an “available credit” associated with them. The reason your score might go down when you pay off student loan is because you’re reducing the number of open accounts you have, and also possibly reducing the diversity of accounts (lines of credit vs. installment loans).

I can’t imagine how “pretty good” could mean “better than good.” Most of the examples posted here are talking about how something relates to your expectations, but that’s not the question. Yes, “pretty good” is often used to describe something that is better than expected, but that doesn’t make it better than “good.”

For example, it doesn’t make sense to say “$50 is good, but $100 is pretty good!”

I do think “pretty good” is often used as an understated way to say that something is very good, e.g. “Yeah, Messi is pretty good at soccer.” However, that’s a play on the actual meaning of the phrase, and should not be construed as the actual meaning.

I don’t know how relevant the “why” is… you’ve got a leak, and the easiest first step is to inspect to see if you can figure out where the leak is originating from. If you can figure it out, then fix that. If not, the next easiest might be to just replace the coolant lines. If it’s still leaking after that, it could be either the radiator or a gasket.
