are you saying its transactional then? like a social contract of “it’s my birthday, so I’m paying for my guests food and drink.” You, my guest, have accepted that contract by bringing a gift?

This flies in the face of birthdays I’m used to. There’s no expectation that If I invite someone to my birthday that a) they need to give me a gift (I would never expect that) or b) I’m paying for their food and drink. I guess because that social contract isn’t in place, the idea that someone can come over and say happy birthday isn’t a big deal. It’s just a gathering that happens to be on my birthday.

Depends on how you define work. I do my dayjob for maybe 2 hours a day at most and then freelance with the rest of my working day. so I’d average 5 hours of work a day betwen the two jobs.

playing the game is a necessary function of corporate work, otherwise it will chew you up and spit you out. you can have autonomy if you’ve made the right people happy, the rest can get fucked.

so samwise gamgee IS the most powerful being

the conversation should never be about reddit losing, it’s about the users winning. And I personally feel like I won. I showed my support for Christian and 3rd party apps, I abondoned ship quickly and I’ve found a new home on the fediverse.

I also stopped using facebook and instagram 18 months ago. They both still exist, but I won. I’m happier now without it. Job done.

consumer-grade field recorders can now capture in 32-bit float (I used Zoom F2s and have a Zoom F6), which reduces/removes our need to set levels beforehand or during. It effectively just has a ridiculous dynamic range.

I guess the technology has just recently made its way onto the scene for these sorts of products.

I don’t want to keep harping on about AI, but seriously. AI. I work in the creative sphere, and Adobe are (finally) earning their subscriptions. Lightroom’s new denoise DNG tool is massively impressive and not all that resource heavy. Photoshops generative fill solves so many problems with photo manipulation, my team is saving hours a week. On the video production side, crumplePop’s suite of audio correction tools is a game changer, and davinci resolves 18.5 beta has so much that we haven’t explored but I’m excited by.

Also, 32-bit float. Holy shit. It’s like recording audio in RAW. I no longer need to consider resourcing for audio production on smaller jobs.

That some day all of the good things in my life could disappear, without me even doing anything. The fleetingness of real happiness and the fact that constant euphoria is unattainable. That I’m not living up to my potential, that I’m being exploited and under valued, that I’m never present for my emotions because I self medicate and distract.

Also my dad just died and I didn’t think it would affect me much because we didn’t have a great relationship. But yesterday I woke up from a dream where he was alive and the happiness I felt to see him again was immediately crushed by the relalisation that I would never see him again, and he’d miss everything from here on out. I was inconsolable, still am tbf

But also I’m in therapy and take prescribed meds that work for me, so I’m doing my best.

Same attitude as not helping the needy from other countries because we have needy of our own here. Using money for one thing does not mean less money for another, equal, thing. Unlearn this.

Well, for one, you’re reducing your lifespan, so you’ll be less of a burden on the healthcare system later in life because you’ll be dead. But that’s obviously ignoring the massive burden on the healthcare system you’ll be when you’re being treated for various cancers.

I don’t disagree with what you’re saying, my point is more steeped in caution. The uninformed don’t know there is a difference between the software and the instances run by the devs, I just don’t want this federated space to be associated with controversy while it’s young. There is plenty more we can say to promote reddit alternatives.

Yeah this is where I fall in my thought process. Lemmy is a tool like any other software, it can be used by good and evil for good and evil. I just want to exercise caution when advertising a reddit alternative that one such alternative is already experiencing controversy (earned or not).

Maybe a “viva la fediverse” would make more sense if someone wanted to cause a stir on r/place

Fedi.Tips still recommends that people

Please don’t use Lemmy :(

I think while the fediverse is still in its relative infancy we need to exercise caution with how we promote it. I’m not saying anybody is wrong for using Lemmy, I engage with it regularly, but my account is on Kbin. I’m saying that while the dust is settling it’s more important that we advertise any alternative to Reddit, not one specific instance etc.

That’s personally what would stop me from doing it anyway. Fuck spez, but also fuck human rights denial

I am a big believer in decluttering and getting rid of stuff that no longer has value to you. But I also take photos of everything before I get rid of or sell them. Old letters, drawings from children, small collections, large collections. Maybe I’m sentimental, but I don’t need the physical object to remember the feelings associated with it. But a photo helps

my partner, her friend and I traveled to another city 4 hours away to go see a musical. my partner found the accomodation on booking.com

when we got to where the apartment should be, we couldn’t find it. we looked around for ages to no avail. found a police station nearby. we asked them if they knew of the address. they pointed to the building across the street they said had been abandoned for 5 years. when we tried to call the host it went thru to an international phoneline in a different language.

oof

Which is the most satisfying IO connector system, in your opinion?
Do you like a tactile click? Are you a sucker for screws? Or something you can put in any direction? Maybe it's yours or another country's power plugs? This is sounding more sexual than I intended I think
