Well yeah, nothing is guaranteed. It’s just a correlation – higher IQ people tend to have more success. More success doesn’t necessarily mean happier. But personally, I would take more success if given the option.

Oh you’re right, I did. Sorry!

As for a test of intelligence – maybe we’ll be able to define what that is at some point in the future. But, granted, until there is a consensus on the meaning of intelligence, there can’t be a test for it.

IQ is, at most, a notion of intelligence. Or it is simply a number. Regardless, it has correlations with other things, and that’s what’s interesting. Asking whether it is or is not “intelligence” is merely semantics.

Only if you’re naïve about IQ and worship it like God. Here is wikipedia’s second paragraph on IQ:

Scores from intelligence tests are estimates of intelligence. Unlike, for example, distance and mass, a concrete measure of intelligence cannot be achieved given the abstract nature of the concept of “intelligence”. IQ scores have been shown to be associated with such factors as nutrition, parental socioeconomic status, morbidity and mortality, parental social status, and perinatal environment. While the heritability of IQ has been investigated for nearly a century, there is still debate about the significance of heritability estimates and the mechanisms of inheritance. Current best estimates for heritability range from 40 to 60% of the variance between individuals in IQ being explained by genetics.

None of that stands out to me as particularly controversial, certainly not pseudoscience. Emphasis on second sentence – it’s not a concrete measure of intelligence.

Unless you’re saying other metrics on people are also somehow eugenics like height, weight, or speed, IQ is not eugenics. Eugenics is the belief that one’s genes affects one’s life, and certain genes will lead to a better life in expectation. (This is in fact a true belief, since there are some genes which are known to cause horrible painful short lives.)

IQ is just a measure of how well you do on an IQ test, which is known to correlate (maybe causally, maybe not) with various things such as income.

How do you know there is no way to test how smart or dumb somebody is? Even if IQ tests aren’t to your standard, you can’t be sure there isn’t another test possible.

They didn’t ask about intelligence, they asked about IQ.

Very effective at translating between different (human) languages. Best if you can find a native speaker to double-check the output. Failing that, reverse translate with a couple different models to verify the meaning is preserved. Even this sometimes fails though – e.g. two words with similar but subtly different definitions might trip you up. For instance, I’m told “the west” refers to different regions in english and japanese, but translating and reverse translating didn’t reveal this error.

Crappy but working code has its uses. Code that might or might not work also has its uses. You should primarily use LLMs in situations where you can accept a high error rate. For instance, in situations where output is quick to validate but would take a long time to produce by hand.

the election results are much closer than you’d think. Popular vote had only a couple % lead. Everyone had to abandon voting for their preferred small party (e.g. greens, BQ, or NDP) to get liberals enough seats to beat the conservatives.

ITT: A lot of people doing the typical StackOverflow thing of asserting the question is bad and answering a different question instead.

No country’s that great but Canada’s doing aight.

IMO it’s cultural. In my country (Canada), it’s considered unpopular and indeed socially expected for one to find it uninteresting or even useless. In Russia, mathletes are popular like football players.

Toxic masculinity (femininity) are negative behaviours associated with men (women), but anyone of any gender can have toxic masculine traits / toxic feminine traits. They are labelled toxic masculinity (femininity) to emphasize that men (women) should be particularly cautious about developing such traits. Learning how to recognize such traits in oneself is important. No gender is gatekept here – the only gatekeeping is “don’t be toxic.”

That said, the terminology is provocative, and it’s the kind of thing which drives people away from the left, so we should really rebrand it.

Oh I assure you, I would have used IPA if my goal was to accurately convey my pronunciation.

*manhwa

I’m intrigued by the differences in the media honestly. Isn’t it odd that manga is practically always black and white? There must be next to no demand for colour manga. Meanwhile, I’m most familiar with manhwa as vertically scrolling colour comics, and manhua similar with a bit different conventions. Regarding manhua, I like that this group posts comics with same-sex relations for both men and women. That’s pretty cash money. Shame Tan Jiu isn’t allowed to post anymore.

What do you believe that most people of your political creed don't?
Just wanted to prove that political diversity ain't dead. Remember, don't downvote for disagreements.

How to increase engagement of cis women on Lemmy?
In a poll on hexbear (see link), it was observed that there are very few cis women on Lemmy. I think this is the intersection of several problems: - engagement of women on Reddit was always low - fewer women in computer science - I'm hesitant to recommend anything fediversy to people who don't tinker with computers like I do and thus might need a more handholdy UX. I gather that transgender people tend to be more into CS, though I don't see why that explains entirely such an astonishing presence of the transgender community on Hexbear. Anyway, I just thought I'd open the floor to brainstorming.
