I mean, “marshmallow” has a more interesting derivation than most of the other words I’ve seen so far.

Althaea officinalis, the marsh mallow or marshmallow, is a species of flowering plant indigenous to Europe, Western Asia and North Africa, which is used in herbalism and as an ornamental plant. A confection made from the root since ancient Egyptian times evolved into today’s marshmallow treat.

I’m looking for this beep-and-unlock feature next time I buy a washing machine…

But why not just beep after that? What’s the point of beeping before the door is unlocked?

Just call ‘em steers. Cows are for milkin’ n breedin’.

It’s even worse than that. X is used so widely in trademarks that it’s guaranteed to attract lawsuits. Facebook had to settle several claims over the change to Meta, and the use of X is a much bigger problem than that. And Musk is so dumb that he’ll probably try to fight them and end up paying a fortune in legal fees anyway.

This is correlation. Corn (or high fructose corn syrup) is a common ingredient in ultra processed foods, which we already know are the cause of the obesity epidemic. Pre-Colombian societies ate plenty of corn.

It’s also not just about sugar as some other comments have suggested. Humans are built to eats carbs and some tribal people even today get a huge amount of calories from honey without any obesity.

The problem is the way sugar (and fat and other ingredients) are processed in industrial food production. Studies have shown that if you give people food that contains the exact same proportion of fats and sugars, in whole food and junk food form, people will eat more of the junk food. This is the problem. Whole foods are generally all fine.

It’s worth pointing out that you don’t need to go overboard with exercise. A brisk 20-minute morning walk and a few minutes of body-weight exercises (push ups, squats) is all you really need to do for physical health. To lose weight, eating healthier is the only effective option — no fad diets, just more whole foods and less junk.

Cycling can also be a great social activity. You can have a nice chatty ride to a coffee shop or something a bit more competitive, depending on your preference. And it’s easy to find a group at your level, no matter your fitness.

My dogs would shit themselves if a robot started vacuuming. I mean, they shit themselves when I do it, so I can only imagine…
