If you check out the modlog, https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/modlog you can see that @Shortcake last did some moderation activity six days ago, deleting and blocking stuff from federated user imona at kbin.melroy.org

I think the admins like @ernest wouldn’t do anything at this point, since the mod reappeared somewhat recently to reclaim the mantle. Instead, we need to figure out how to reach out to Shortcake and figure out how to get moderation more active here again.

I’m actually happy to give a vote of confidence in @Shortcake who did a great job moderating this magazine in the beginning.

If that individual would just return to checking this magazine more frequently, I’m happy to leave things as-is.

But if that’s not possible, hopefully Shortcake will appoint someone as a third mod soon so this magazine can get cleaned up. (Speak of - any volunteers?)

Actually, @Shortcake got back to me two days ago and took care of the spam - or so we thought. I’m sending another message now since we’re getting more spam.

I’m wondering if an email was sent out as part of the updates that @ernest and @admin are doing to kbin, which might have grabbed the mods attention here. The lack of email notifications makes it hard to keep up, I’m thinking.

I don’t believe it’s really over.

Reddark is still reporting 1839 subs are dark.

At least one 1+ million sub is still private, and at least one 10+ million sub is still restricted.

I’m surprised though - I’ve heard arguments that John Oliver was okay with reddit admins, so why the pushback now to drop it?

Try asking in /m/kbinMeta?

I get logged out on occasion but the remember me option works well when i log back in. So FWIW i’m not seeing this myself.

It’s interesting how you went from gung-ho anti-reddit to this. hmm.

Where do you see the old gung-ho anti-reddit bit? Genuinely curious.

Seconded!

Though perhaps the redditor should have mentioned kbin instead of lemmy - that would have totally worked.

Who says they failed? They look like a stunning success to me, considering how much growth the fediverse and alternatives like squabbles got during that time, and the momentum has kept up after.

Even now more and more groups are moving off reddit to something else.

And I guess you didn’t see this year’s final r/place picture.

From a monetary point of view, spez will probably win. He’ll destroy reddit completely in his quest for the IPO, and get to the point where the numbers are juiced up enough that he can sell high, make a huge chunk of money, and take his exit. But that doesn’t negate our success.

Also,…

how does it feel knowing that you looked like

Please don’t confuse us with your mirror.

Hey, it’s the fediverse! Make your own instance and your own magazines on there, and if there are like-minded folks who appreciate your moderation, your instance will grow. You’d generally not have to depend on the whims of other mods or admins that way, but have nearly full control over your own safe space.

they certainly can’t block me from reporting that it isn’t working, for them to accept it.

Is r/help run by admins? I can’t remember.

Anyways, while I agree that they can’t ignore your request for your data under the GDPR, i don’t think there’s a law saying that they have to acknowledge their website being broken. Technically it’s fine for their system to be broken as long as you’re able to submit a GDPR request (even if only by email), unfortunately.

Wow, the combined company notabug was already defunct in 2007? I wonder whatever happened to that company once reddit got sold off to Conde Nast

In the 2nd case they’d probably see reddit’s true colours and run pretty early on though…

you are right! I only checked on my profile, so can’t be sure. It’s just misleading though if they still keep them.

Yup, that’s kind of one of the biggest issues with them actually. It’s incredibly misleading!

Anyway, it seems that they have already removed my account or at least removed access to it to me so there is not much to be done now i guess.

Yeah, I’ve heard this story before. Hopefully PDS got all of yours and hopefully this post will help others as well.

Yeah, the point of the GDPR request - the data retrieval request - is to get a copy of all posts and comments, which can then be feed into a script that does the actual deletion. Note - I’m not saying that reddit should not do the deletion themselves - in fact I feel that they should, seeing how hard they make it to do it ourselves with their stupid limits.

Why do we need to ask reddit for a copy of all our comments to delete them? Because reddit has hidden limits and you can think you’ve deleted everything, only to realize too late (after you deleted your account) that a bunch of stuff got missed and now can no longer be deleted. See for example https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/46805/Strange-phenomenon-while-deleting-my-comments and https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/172540/How-can-I-automate-the-process-of-deleting-my-remaining and https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/p/425000/If-you-re-nuking-your-old-reddit-content-this-might-be

Worse, all tools like PDS will give a false sense of security here. You’ll see from your profile that you have no posts and no comments left, but then you Google your own reddit username and find a bunch of stuff. (It’s actually reddit and not the tools like PDS to blame for that false sense of security.)

It seems to have done the job though

My question is - how do you know? how did you check?

Be careful here, these tools don’t always delete everything, see https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/47320/PSA-If-you-have-more-than-1000-posts-more-than

A better way is to make a GDPR request for your data and then use something like shreddit to delete it. If you can’t wait, then you can also try the process described in https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/65260/PSA-Here-s-exactly-what-to-do-if-you-hit-the

I had them confirm that they won’t recreate it when I have deleted it

Important to retain this!

They still say that they will retain the IP used for creating the account. Not sure if this is legitimate data redemption after I have asked for my data to be deleted according to GDPR?

Only if they can find some other basis to keep it now that you’ve withdrawn your consent - e.g. some law in an EU member requires them to retain the IP address. Another example - they claim they need it in much the same way that the credit card money needs to know your personal info so they can continue collecting your payments until the debt you own them is paid off.

TBH, I’m hard pressed to understand on what alternative basis they are able to use to retain your IP address. This might be something to refer to your regulator for additional information.

reddit data retrieval thoughts
When I first started the timeline thread for reddit GDPR/CCPA requests, [https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/50981/Reddit-Data-Retrieval-Request-timeline-thread](https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/50981/Reddit-Data-Retrieval-Request-timeline-thread) it seemed virtually no one got theirs. Now, 11 out of 15 have received it. I even got mine via email, despite being permabanned and then deleting my account afterwards. Also, they are really pushing it, but so far no one seems to have gone over the deadline. I do note that I seem to have gotten mine later than some others who put in requests later than I but got theirs earlier. In my case they were just one day shy of 30 days - but I did a request under 'Other' rather than GDPR or CCPA. Hopefully this provides hope for others who want to grab their archive from reddit.

Ordinary redditors are feeling the pain as well.
The protests worked, and so did moving/editing/deleting our old content. As one person complains, > > > I'm not here for Reddit, but for the aggregation of niche communities. I follow a lot of obscure manga that have relatively small followings and recently I got into an IT job which opened a lot of technological exploration for me. The worst part about this change isn't even that we are losing 3rd party apps, but that only members of the communities I frequent are the ones who care enough to protest. Can't tell you how many times now I've looked something up on Reddit and find an answer to the issue I have, only to realize that the community is closed or the post is deleted in protest. Now we are stuck in this limbo where protests seem to have lost their steam, niche communities are being overthrown and killed because of that greedy little pigboy. Seriously, fuck spez. > >

Maybe Reddit’s slowing revenue growth is partially responsible for the company trying to lock things down. - The Verge
According to The Information, Reddit’s revenues were up 38 percent in 2022, but that’s down from the “more than doubling of revenue” it saw from 2020 to 2021. That said, The Information says Reddit still earned “about $670 million” in revenues last year. I don’t know if getting back the $10 million in “pure infrastructure costs” CEO Steve Huffman told me that it takes to support third-party apps is going to make all that much of a difference.

How to get the word out on how to delete everything on Reddit?
So reddit has a 1000 index limit, which fools you. You think you deleted everything and your profile is empty. But you didn't get it all. I keep seeing articles like [https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/77406/Why-doesn-t-power-delete-suite-edit-all-my-comments](https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/77406/Why-doesn-t-power-delete-suite-edit-all-my-comments) and [https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/79420/Would-reporting-my-deleted-comments-to-mods-help-get-them](https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/79420/Would-reporting-my-deleted-comments-to-mods-help-get-them) We need to get the word out. There is a way to delete all of your posts and comments, and it doesn't need to rely on a GDPR request to reddit (though having the GDPR archive certainly helps). More importantly though, we need to get the word out about the 1k limit. This almost got me too - luckily I had a few posts where I had commented, so I could see even though all my comments were taken care of in my profile, that some comments got missed, because I still saw them on my posts. But how can we do this? How do we make sure to spread the word so folks don't misunderstand tools like PDS and then wonder why a bunch of their content is still up; even worse, that they already deleted their account and now have no way to go back and take it from reddit. What can we do? Ideas?

Poll: Power Delete Suite users: are you saving your content?
And if you are backing up your content, are you checking the file afterwards to make sure it has all of the content you wanted to save? I tried PDS and it actually overwrote some entries but then failed to save them, causing me to lose content. But it turns out I also tried from an older version. Would love to hear about success stories from folks who have tried PDS, confirmed their CSVs have their content, and are now ready to start reposting some OC to the fediverse!

PSA: Here's exactly what to do if you hit the 1000 indexing limit and it stops you from erasing all your posts.
This is a followup to my previous PSA, [https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/47320/PSA-If-you-have-more-than-1000-posts-more-than](https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/47320/PSA-If-you-have-more-than-1000-posts-more-than) That one warned you about the problem, which seems to have caught a lot of people unawares and caused a lot of confusion in general. (Thank you reddit!!! /s) Now here's what you can do about it. If you happen to know that you're only slightly over the limit in one category, odds are good that one of the modified versions of Power Delete Suite will work for you. (You want one with at least an additional 5.1s delay - the original PDS fails to delete/overwrite a lot of stuff because it tries too fast and reddit rejects the changes and imposes a cooldown period.) PDS will delete your comments and submissions (posts), and it checks all four categories - new, hot, top, and controversial. So if you say only had 1001 or 1002, odds are good that the last few missing from new would show up in top (if old and upvoted a lot) or controversial (if old and downvoted a lot), and thus you still get everything wiped. In theory you could get really lucky here. Say you have exactly 3000 comments - your newest 1000 have never been upvoted or downvoted, your oldest 1000 have all been heavily downvoted, and your middle 1000 have been heavily upvoted. Then PDS would get the newest, the most controversial 1000 - which happen to be the oldest, and the top 1000 - which happen to be the middle. All 3000 comments gone. But what to do if you have A LOT beyond the limit? Say more than 4000? Also keep in mind, I was just shy of 1500 comments, and I wasn't so lucky - this method didn't get everything for me, despite not even hitting 2000. A common tip is to search for your reddit self on google. This works really well to find more stuff but won't catch everything. I speak from experience here. The right answer is to do a GDPR or CCPA request to reddit, and then they will have to give you your data, your complete history. You can then use this to wipe everything clean. However, folks who started this around or after the blackout aren't getting timely responses. (As late as the end of last April, it came back in a few hours. Now, everyone who has requested has yet to hear back.) I'm skeptical that we'll get timely responses here. So the other right answer used to be to use the Pushshift API instead (hat-tip to 1chemistdown - [https://kbin.social/u/1chemistdown](https://kbin.social/u/1chemistdown) ). That API archived a copy of reddit - and unlike reddit, it didn't have the 1000 indexing limit. So you could find even older content just by searching yourself using that API. The bad news is that this no longer works as Pushshift was forced to shutdown by reddit, and they won't be reopening normal API access for regular users. The good news is that before all this went down, Pushshift published torrents of their raw data. Up to the end of 2022. You can just download this, and then extract your own post and comment history. The Pushshift torrent is 1.66TB, compressed. But the Pushshift team also released really good scripts so it's easy to extract your own info without having to uncompress the full archive like you traditionally would with a zip file. Instead, their scripts uncompress a small segment at a time in RAM and process that, so you just need enough space to store the compressed files and enough compute power to process it. (Spoiler alert - most modern laptops have enough compute power. My cheap \<$1k laptop did.) Even better - you can selectively download specific files from a torrent. Pushshift's torrent is broken up into a bunch of files, two each per sub (one for comments and one for submissions). So if you know which subs you frequented, you can just pick and download those instead of having to download the full archive. So grab your reddit data from the Pushshift torrent, use their scripts to print out the complete list of every comment and every post that you have ever created on reddit, and then feed that to something like the reddit-migration script or a modified shreddit script to completely wipe everything. 100% of everything. No need to depend on the benevolence of reddit to hand you your history back first. (For those in the EU or California, I'm sure reddit will get back to us eventually, but you'll forgive me for being more skeptical when these powerful laws don't apply.) The specific details on where to grab everything, including links to the torrent and to the various github scripts and even patches that I wrote, is on my other article - [https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/59451/Finally-Managed-to-erase-all-1477-of-my-comments](https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/59451/Finally-Managed-to-erase-all-1477-of-my-comments) TL;DR - you can grab your entire reddit history from a torrent published by pushshift up to the end of 2022, and use that data to overwrite/delete your content beyond the 1000 index limit on reddit.

Finally! Managed to erase all 1477 of my comments!
Okay, finally I am confident that I got them all! Here's what I did First, I got a torrent client set up, and went to [https://academictorrents.com/details/c398a571976c78d346c325bd75c47b82edf6124e/tech&filelist=1](https://academictorrents.com/details/c398a571976c78d346c325bd75c47b82edf6124e/tech&filelist=1) It turns out that you can just download individual subs from the torrent instead of the whole thing. I know exactly which ones I first commented on, it was a small list and the subs themselves were pretty small too at the time. So downloading just those subs from the torrent was pretty speedy and easy. After that I came up with a quick script (based on the example scripts by the pushshift team's github) at [https://github.com/Watchful1/PushshiftDumps](https://github.com/Watchful1/PushshiftDumps) to parse and find my comments and spit out the comment ids into a text file. Next, I modifed the super useful script at [https://github.com/luphoria/reddit-migration](https://github.com/luphoria/reddit-migration) one last time to accept a list of comment ids in a text file (instead of asking reddit for them), and then had it overwrite them all. Looks like I won't be needing that GDPR archive after all, thanks for nuttin reddit!! Reddit Data Retrieval Request timeline thread
I thought about it and it'll be helpful a thread going of folks who made a request, and when they got their data. To help give other folks an idea of when they might here back, if they put a request in now. I put my request in the day before the blackout. Still waiting to hear back from Reddit. Edit: Just FYI I ended up deleting my account before hearing back on this. If I ever do hear back I will update on here, but at this point I'm seriously doubting that will happen. Edit2: 2023-07-10 - they got back to me. Since I no longer have a reddit account this was emailed to the email address I registered the account with.
