The principles of operation of the fediverse are actually very aligned with the “small government, personal freedom, free speech” ethos that conservatives in the US claim to have.
The culture on most fedi spaces is hostile towards anything less than luxury gay space communism politically but it’s pretty easy to ignore because the power structure of the fediverse is ideal and makes it so you filter out the very worst of the tankies if you so choose.
Now if you are a fascist who is only concerned about dominating others opinions and rights, and only care about freeze peach and not freedom of association and expression I can see how you might find the fediverse objectionable.
The fedi needs more voices from all sides, it does not need fascists.
She’s a kid, you are hardly an adult. Just be kind, the things you are going through she can’t really understand at that age. And the things that a big deal to her, aren’t that big of a deal for you.
When you both are older and more mature you will hopefully just remember that you were kind and not the teenage drama that comes with adolescence and finding your place in the world.
Is it full of spam because it’s unmoderated or is it just empty. If it’s just empty but has a good amount of subs just start posting. A lot of times the community can police itself and if you need a moderator if it becomes more active then reach out the the instance admins that the community is hosted on.
Find a new place to live. Or a new place to store valuables
If your mom is a narcissist as you claim, she isn’t going to start respecting your privacy just because you got a new lock. If you have things you don’t want to be discovered then don’t store them at your parents’ home.
There is an argument to be had about granting children, especially older children, the expectation of privacy but that isn’t going to convince your mom. Anything you do to try to modify your bedroom door is just going to aggravate the situation further without resolving things.
My suggestion would be to try to talk to your mother or store your bong (just an example) at your friends house.
I came at the beginning of the Reddit exodus in June and I haven’t noticed necessarily a shift to Reddit’s culture as it’s grown but more of just the general toxicity that comes along with a platform growing to a certain size.
There is a lot more trolls and likewise people who won’t engage civilly with someone who has an opposing view (because why would you when there is a good chance the other person is just a troll?). I feel like the reaction to Lemmy.world blocking piracy communities or most instances degenerating from Hexbear have shown me that.
Lemmy culture still seems to be intact. A lot of posting is still tech focused and the is still a lot of good discussion. It just seems like a lot of posts that make “Hot” on the All feed tend to be more combative or politically charged.
I get a lot of scratch paper as part of my job entails troubleshooting printers (kill me) and so I have stacks of printer test pages, pages printed out with PCL and PS errors and what not. These make good canvases for sketching up quick network designs or diagraming things such as work flows. I usually scan them in a note taking app before shredding them to keep my desk clear but it’s much more convenient that having to use Visio or something on things that just need to be sketched out
I use it just as much as Reddit and generally enjoy the home/all experience much better. What you miss is the niche communities but I feel like the better experience on the “big” communities like !apple_enthusiast@lemmy.world or !technology@lemmy.world make up for it.
It also got me to join mastodon over twitter, so I’m grateful for that as well
I don’t care enough to turn it off if it’s on by default but I’m also not going out of my way to turn it on either. If somebody has a problem with me leaving their message on read instead of being understanding that people get busy then it’s probably better for me to know that person has some red flags.
They probably use a third party company to mail statements and such. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have already tried to contact the account owner but are unable to. They still need an address on file for account verification so they can’t exactly remove your address without an updated address from the customer. I don’t know why they asked you though. You wouldn’t have permission to update information on someone else’s account.
