This thread is filled with comments on DE, but it was your comment that convinced me to finally play the game.

Thanks for the story!

What was a profound moment that a video game caused you to experience, and why?
The moment that inspired this question: A long time ago I was playing an MMO called Voyage of the Century Online. A major part of the game was sailing around on a galleon ship and having naval battles in the 1600s. The game basically allowed you to sail around all of the oceans of the 1600s world and explore. The game was populated with a lot of NPC ships that you could raid and pick up its cargo for loot. One time, I was sailing around the western coast of Africa and I came across some slavers. This was shocking to me at the time, and I was like “oh, I’m gonna fuck these racist slavers up!” I proceed to engage the slave ship in battle and win. As I approach the wreckage, I’m bummed out because there wasn’t any loot. Like every ship up until this point had at least some spare cannon balls or treasure, but this one had nothing. … then it hit me. A slave ship’s cargo would be… people. I sunk this ship and the reason there wasn’t any loot was because I killed the cargo. I felt so bad. I just sat there for a little while and felt guilty, but I always appreciated that the developers included that detail so I could be humbled in my own self-righteousness. Not all issues can be solved with force.

Google’s new Topics API makes users vulnerable to fingerprinting attacks
Google has stated it plans to address developers’ concerns by “making web publishers promise not to abuse the API”. Google’s new browser-based tracking functionality available via their “Topics API” has sparked numerous concerns recently, including fear that the heightened communication of web browser history could lead to “fingerprinting attacks” which could be used to track users across devices by profiling recent web history. When prompted with this issue, Google started their short-term solution is to have web developers who enroll in the new Topics API platform take pledge that they will not abuse the new tool, whatever that means.

Checking my Lemmy messages. I love going back and forth with people in comments.

Thanks for adding that extra context!

I definitely think the “hey, can I ask you for a favor because recovering from this surgery is driving me nuts…?” is the way to go.

Oftentimes people struggle to know how to help a friend when they’re in a vague kind of trouble like after a surgery.

For instance, I’m not sure how I would help one of my friends if they had a major surgery. Maybe I’d send them a door dash gift card?

I think including context about what kind of help would get you more specific. Financial help is different from mental support is different from help with moving things. Also, are you looking for professional help or just help from a friend?

Assuming you’re referring to asking for help from a friend, I recommend not thinking of it as “help”, which implies that you’re asking for a gift, but consider it a “favor”, which implies that you’re making a request with the understanding that you intend to return the favor if the opportunity arises.

I enjoy helping my friends, but I’ll also tend to weigh the situation and if it’s a big inconvenience to help (and if it’s not a desperate need), I’ve been known to decline or help in some other way. However, if a friend asks for a favor, I’m much more likely to say yes because I understand this person wants a sustained relationship with me and intends that we help each other in that relationship rather than having it be a 1-way street.

Folks generally don’t like being friends with people that only take and don’t give.

Yuuuup. It’s happened at least once in the last month.

Usually, though, I end up getting between 5-8 hours a night. (5hrs for the late nights, 8hrs for the next night when I’m so tired I could sleep in a warzone).

Surprised I haven’t seen this response yet:

I say awake doing things until I am on the verge of passing out from being sleepy. If that means I only get 3 hours of sleep, then so be it.

Only used it a couple of times for work when researching some broad topics like data governance concepts.

It’s a good tool for learning because you can ask it about a subject and then ask it to explain the subject “as a metaphor to improve comprehension” and it does a pretty good job. Just make sure you use some outside resources to ensure you’e not being hallucinated all over.

My bosses use it to write their emails (ESL).

Went back for like a day after my main amount on v.lemmy went down with the server.

After a day I couldn’t stomach it anymore. Reddit All is just a bunch of warzone footage or clickbait news.

I created a new main on a new Lemmy server and am loving being here.
