One of the biggest things that most amateur filmmakers or video makers make is not getting sufficient tone.

Before shooting, record a fairly long stretch of just the ambient sound in the area where you’re filming so that when you are editing, it can be laid under the audio tracks and help to smooth out the jumps in audio from different clips.

Okay, to put it another way:

Once the child is born, it stops being literally a part of its mother and instead becomes an individual.

but it’s not like any sudden development occurs at the moment of birth.

You mean other than breathing its own air and no longer being physically connected to its mother’s womb? I’d call that pretty significant. I would argue that the moment it breaths its first breath on its own rather than as a part of its mother’s uterus, it becomes a murder victim, not an abortion.

You are absolutely correct regarding AI. I hadn’t considered that. It gives me something to think about. Thanks!

I lean pretty hard left who is also pro death-penalty (IN VERY SPECIFIC CIRCUMSTANCES)

  • If the case has absolutely been proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

  • All appeals have been exhausted.

  • Proof is absolutely undeniable.

  • Guilty party shows no remorse.

  • Crime is suffiently heinous (mass murder, child killing, serial killers, etc…)

  • A legitimate psychiatric board has deemed that there is little to no chance at rehabilitation nor does the guilty party show any inclination to want to rehabilitate.

if ALL those things are true, (plus some that I haven’t even considered) then I would rather execute them than pay for their living expenses for the rest of their natural life, or worse see them released at the end of their sentance absolutely knowing that they’ll do it again.

Because -isms exist in a binary world (sexism, racism, etc…)

Any increase in visibility for whatever minority they happen to hate, is a decrease in visibility for them (in their feeble transactional little minds) and it drives them bonkers.

The notion that “facts matter”.

I’ve spent my entire life believing that facts don’t care about feelings. That scientific truth doesn’t require your belief in it in order to be true. That at the end of the day, reasoning will beat emotion…

By far the most dis-heartening thing about the last few years (to me) has been accepting the idea they “facts” are “whatever is shouted the loudest”.

It, more than anything else, makes me feel helpless. If the enemy isn’t even playing with the same fact-sheet… How do you even begin to fight that?

The important thing to understand is that Lemmy doesn’t have an inherent culture. Nor does Reddit, or Twitter, or Mastodon, or any other platform.

They are communities, and communities naturally change as they scale.

So yes, of course Lemmy had changed. But I’d argue that the inherent strength of the whole concept of “federation” is that any one particular instance only has to witness as much or as little of that change as they want to.

If you don’t like where Lemmy as a whole is going, find (or create) an instance that agrees with you and de-federates from most others. win-win.

The point is that you are responsible for your own particular Lemmy experience in ways that you never were on Reddit.

I use it daily.

Of the two different things I used Reddit for, Lemmy is a 100% replacement for one, but sadly lacking in the other.

  1. Current events (news, politics, etc…) the transition to Lemmy was seamless.

  2. Tech Support on specific niche software (kdenlive, Scribus, Gimp, etc…) is still lacking. there aren’t a lot of communities dedicated to specific hobbies where a person can ask and answer questions from other users.

In regards to #1, there is actually one area where Lemmy has an advantage in my case. Because my local instance is my country instance, having that third “local” option means that I can, without any searching, keep up to date on national current events as well.

it’s like being in a Canada only news site, and then if I want, I can hit “all” and see the rest of it. it’s super easy in a way that Reddit couldn’t be.

In order to proceed, please choose from the following options:

Press 1 for a glib reply Press 2 for a badly formed pun press 3 for a sincere denial

I can no longer even imagine my phone without Niagara.

IMO the developer managed to capture exactly how a phone should work while mostly staying out of the way.

Because once a corporation increases prices due to “supply and demand” or whatever bullshit reason they make up that week, those prices never go back down if the reason changes. conveniently.

Every corporation will say “we need to increase the price on “x” because the primary supplier in Bolivia is facing economic turmoil…blah blah blah.” But once that turmoil is over and supply returns to normal, they don’t bother taking the prices back down and rely on the fact that modern society is too distracted by their “conveniences” to care.

“The people will not revolt. They will not look up from their screens.” – a stage play based on George Orwell’s 1984

They (the super-rich) have created a class of people beneath them who don’t notice or care that they’re being fucked over so long as they are provided with more and more vapid content to consume.

Literally everything to do with modern life.

I’m not saying that we should all pull a BSG and give it all up to be cavemen again.

But our bodies most certainly didn’t evolve in order to sit at desks, stare at screens, communicate without physical contact, and avoid sunshine like the plague.

We evolved to be active, but developed the technology that allows most of us to be sedentary 99% of the time, and then we wonder why obesity and chronic back pain are pandemics.

You’re assuming that the point of the American justice system IS to refrain and rehabilitate. It’s not.

A for-profit prison system seriously is low-key the most fucked up thing in a country full of fucked up things.

American prisons exist to make a profit for their investors. They do this by both government subsidies (which are calculated per inmate) and using the prisoners as cheap labor that they legally only have to pay pennies.

The system NEEDS a continuous influx of prisoners (slaves) to remain profitable. Rehabilitation is anathema to that.

Mastodon (specifically mstdn.ca). Lemmy.ca, pixelated (though I rarely use it like I should) and I’m hoping to soon get a tilvids account to document my progress modelling for X-plane and creating the assets for my own computer board game.

I’m old enough that typing 55378008 into my scientific calculator and then turning it upside-down absolutely fits the criteria.

I don’t hate it by any means. But design wise I always end up back in Jerboa which (to me) seems more old-school and familiar.

I find it hard to put into words, and obviously it’s completely subjective, but aps like Connect and Liftoff seem too “fluffy” to me, with UI elements being larger and in-your-face. Whereas Jerboa just kind of gets the heck out of my way.

One of my all time favourites.

As cliche as it sounds, the breakdown of their relationship and the personalities involved are so spot on to me and my ex-wife that I was floored the moment that I saw it.
